Yellow Jacket
The time looks like has arrived that I need to buy one of these... To check my AGEs...
ancona and DCFusor, you two guys (among others, also, PMBug, this has been at least sort of addressed before) know this kind of stuff than I do. Here is an Ultrasound Thickness Gauge for sale at Amazon:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008H1D4BQ/ref=dra_a_cs_ss_hn_it_P1400_1000?tag=dradis-20"]Amazon.com: Ultrasonic Thickness Meter Metal Digital Tester Gauge Velocity 1.2~225mm: Home Improvement@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/414hai4clDL.@@AMEPARAM@@414hai4clDL[/ame]
A couple of questions for anyone:
1) The specs say that the minimum thickness (steel) is 1.2 mm. Since sound travels more slowly through gold than steel, would I get any slack (maybe 1.0 mm) in using this device on a gold coin?
2) If there were to be tungsten inside, would the change in metal cause any kind of "echo effect" that might give a bogus reading?
3) Amazon's device is about $164.00. Is that too cheap, or is it *likely* to be "good enough for government work"?
Thanks everyone!
