Well, last night I threw those old sterling rings into my crucible, took your basic old propane torch (used for sweating copper pipe) and melted the silver. I now have a really ugly button of .925. 15.73 grams.
What would Borax do?

it causes the metal to 'flow' and most non-alloyed impurities will separate and surface. like solder.

(it actually acts on the slag, not the metal but the effect is the same in any case).
