There was an article in the Mises Daily section a few years back from a man who served in the current phase of the Iraq war. He described how, as the Saddam regime was coming unglued, the people in a town he was in were using goats, bottled water, and cigarettes as currency.

All of which are more valuable than a piece of paper...

I'll try to dig it up.
