I am suprised the BoE published this

Long, but worth the read, paper published by the Bank of England:

Look at page 7 where it lists how many banking crisis' and defaults per year under various systems.

Pre-gold standard (1820-1869): 0.6 and 0.7
Gold Standard (1870-1913): 1.3 and 0.9
Current (1973-2009): 2.6 and 1.3
