Libertad premiums

Why are the premiums on Libertads the highest amongst government minted coins?

Good question. I would think there must be some supply issue or importation (customs/taxes) issue.

I don't think so because on Banco Azteca's website, they are selling for $19.38 US.

As that site is in spanish, & doesn't seem to have an english option, with my limited amount of spanglish, I'd have no way of knowing if it says they charge an export fee on top of any other fees. Not to mention I don't even see a tab for any libertads on there.

As far as I know, Banco Azteca does not export. The scrolling banner at the bottom of the page gives the dollar/peso exchange: Dolar Americano, venta is sell, today at 17.60 pesos to the dollar. The next item is: Plata Libertad (silver Libertads) selling for 341 pesos. 341/17.60=19.38 USD. The best I can find online is $20.56 at APMEX.
Even the Casa de Moneda, the Mexican Mint currently has them listed at 365 pesos, which works out to 20.74 USD. Banks like Banco Azteca don't always keep up with the latest changes in price. But even at a discount, they are higher than Eagles and Maple Leafs.
I only use this as an example of how high the price of the Libertad is, even in Mexico, compared to Eagles and Maple Leafs. Before I started stacking, I would have thought that Eagles would have been the most expensive, followed by Maple Leafs and Mexican coinage to be the cheapest.
I'm just curious as to why they are more.

This article is a few years old, but seems to indicate the issue is low mintages:
Quote :
Libertad gold and silver coins from the oldest mint in North America, the Casa de Moneda in Mexico, have always appealed to buyers for a range of reasons. This includes ... their incredibly low mintages that are more typically associated with commemoratives than with bullion coins.

Collectors of this series, the oldest bullion series in the world having begun in 1982, are well aware of the fact that these coins have some of the lowest mintages of any world bullion coin. ...

Well done, bug.
So they are pricing a numismatic value based on low mintage numbers but when it comes down to where the rubber meets the road, dealers only offer a pittance above spot to buy them.
