Author and researcher Keith Hunter joins me to discuss what he believe to be the hidden science behind artificial earthquakes. Thanks for tuning in!

Earthquake slams Japan, residents flee some coastal areas

January 1, 20245:51 AM EST Updated 2 hours ago

TOKYO, Jan 1 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck central Japan on Monday, triggering warnings for residents to evacuate some areas on its west coast, knocking out power to thousands of homes and disrupting flights and rail services to the affected region.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 triggered waves of around 1 metre along parts of the Sea of Japan coast with a larger wave expected, public broadcaster NHK reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued tsunami warnings for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama, marking the first major warnings since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan.

North and South Korea brace for tsunami after Japan quake

January 1, 20247:11 AM EST Updated 29 min ago

SEOUL, Jan 1 (Reuters) - A tsunami measuring under one metre (3.3 ft) reached South Korea's east coast in the wake of a massive earthquake that hit Japan on Monday, South Korea's meteorological agency said, which added there may be more and larger waves in the next hours.

The first tsunami to reach South Korea's coast was 67 cm (2.2 ft) but it may increase in size after the initial waves and may continue for more than 24 hours, the meteorological agency said

Japan quake: Rescuers rush to reach survivors

January 2, 20245:18 AM EST Updated 36 min ago

  • At least 48 dead after 7.6 magnitude quake on Jan 1
  • Major damage to roads, houses on west coast of main island
  • Thousands of rescuers struggling to reach worst-hit areas
  • Resident tells of miraculous escape from toppled home
WAJIMA, Japan, Jan 2 (Reuters) - At least 48 people were killed after a powerful earthquake hit Japan on New Year's Day, with rescue teams struggling on Tuesday to reach isolated areas where buildings had been toppled, roads wrecked and power cut to tens of thousands of homes.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck on Monday afternoon, prompting people in coastal areas to flee to higher ground as tsunami waves hit Japan's western seaboard, sweeping cars and houses into the water.

Taiwan's strongest earthquake in 25 years kills nine; 50 missing

  • Earthquake kills nine, more than 800 injured
  • Fifty on minibuses heading to national park missing
  • Epicentre just off Taiwan's sparsely populated east coast
  • Semiconductor giant TSMC evacuates production lines
TAIPEI, April 3 (Reuters) - Taiwan's biggest earthquake in at least 25 years killed nine people on Wednesday, injuring more than 800, while 50 went missing en route to a national park, authorities said, as rescuers used ladders to bring others to safety.

Television broadcast images of buildings tilted at precarious angles in the mountainous, sparsely populated eastern county of Hualien, near the epicentre of the 7.2 magnitude quake, which struck just offshore at about 8 a. m. (0000GMT).

I watched some of the videos of the tilted buildings in Hualien. Scary stuff. Also saw some videos of the water line pulling back on beaches in Japan. They were anticipating a huge tidal wave to come from the quake which apparently has the epicenter just offshore from Taiwan.

Why was Taiwan so well prepared for the earthquake?

  • Taiwan regularly hit by quakes, especially rural east coast
  • Taiwan has well practiced rescue teams
  • Building codes revised after massive 1999 quake
  • Alert system same as one which would warn of Chinese attack
HUALIEN, Taiwan, April 4 (Reuters) - When a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan's scenic and largely rural east coast county of Hualien on Wednesday, local official Chang Tung-yao knew exactly what to do, having experienced a similar temblor six years before.

Within two hours of the quake, which struck just before 8 a.m. (0000 GMT) as people were getting ready for work, Chang said an emergency shelter was arranged at a nearby school where more than 130 residents ended up spending the night.

"Joined-up contact with government departments was key," Chang, a neighbourhood chief, the lowest level of elected official in Taiwan, told Reuters.

Since the 2018 earthquake of magnitude 6.4, in which seven people died, Chang said local authorities have strengthened coordination with government units and non-governmental organizations for disaster response and relief.

This time, county officials and police along with other units who helped evacuate residents in affected areas of downtown Hualien city worked together to clear one of the damaged buildings before it could collapse in any aftershocks.
