There are a lot more banks in Panama than just BancoNational. As a state bank, it's notoriously inefficient. I've spent some time down in central America before (including Panama). Growing up here in the USA, it can surprise you at times how "stone age" they are with their systems. They still rely on paper receipts / accounting for a large part of their business / commerce / record keeping. They are slowly moving into the computer age, but (at least, last I knew) hadn't caught up to American standards. It's quite possible they needed 5 days to fix something internally, although they could have picked a better week.
