<National Report> Aging residents in Newark, Ohio, spent last weekend living it up like they did in their twenties after receiving an experimental new drug known as Methapromazine which was suppose to be delivered to an Ohio lab for testing on a controlled group of volunteers. A shipping error is blamed for the delivery of the drug to a Newark pharmacy.

The pharmacy is under contract with several senior housing facilities in the Newark area who distributed the drug to the Brookside Assisted Living Housing Complex, Wellington Court Apartments, Hampton Woods Senior Community and to the Robert Mapplethorpe House for Seniors on Thursday, September 12, 2013.

The error wasn’t discovered until Monday after the medication was accidentally administered to 168 seniors who live in senior housing facilities in Licking County. Cecil Bernard, 72, a resident at Hampton Woods reported the medication had side effects that he found “pleasurable.”

Methapromazine is being developed as a new anti-depression, anti-psychotic medication. The new drug is primarily a compounding of amphetamine stimulants and the psychotropic medication Asendin used to treat psychotic depression. The known side effects of Methapromazine are anxiety, agitation, manic episodes and aggressive or hostile behavior. The drug is being tested for those who suffer from severe depression attributed to disorders of the nervous system.

According to Licking County health administrator Dr. Melinda Wicks, PhD, the elderly residents who consumed the medication are doing fine though several residents reported having side effects over the three day period they took Methapromazine.

Dr. Wicks said, “We had eighteen residents who had acute side effects to the drug. Some acted out aggressively and there were a couple of fights. Generally those with acute side effects reported having a lot of energy most said they felt like there were in their twenties again. Most of the men said they felt a strong sense of confidence, ability accompanied by potent sexual urges.”

Wicks added, “Apparently about twenty residents went into Newark, and feeling young again they visited family, went shopping, dancing and some attended parties. There was a group who made their way to the University campus and joined the Restore the Fourth protest on Saturday.

According to the Newark Daily Press shortly after 3:00 pm a brawl broke out near the Administration building which quickly escalated into a riot involving an estimated 100 to 150 students and protesters.

Campus Police called for additional help which resulted in around 40 officers in riot gear from the Newark Police Department and Licking County Sheriff’s Office closing down Reed Road and Sunset Blvd. to contain the protesters to the campus and prevent them from moving into a business district.

The police department report a number of officers were assaulted and did scuffle with a number protesters which led to 34 arrests. Only minor injuries were reported. Needless to say of those arrested who spent Saturday night in jail nine are residents of senior housing.

Local residents who witnessed the odd behavior of so many elderly grabbed cell phones or cameras and caught several of the elderly residents having a senior moment.
