As an aside, pmbug.com was down all weekend. Was there some outside reason, or were you just down for maintenance? If possible, in the future, it would be nice if there was a notification posted saying that the site is down and would be down for whatever specified time. Getting access forbidden and 403 errors just drives off potential readers.

Odd, it was not down for me.

Did anyone other than mmerlinn have issues?

The site was not down - there are numerous posts date stamped all weekend long too. If you were seeing 403 (forbidden) errors, it was likely that the IP you were using is on the ban list. Check the following site and shoot me an email (info@ <sitename>.com) if it happens again.

Will do that and get back to you. If it is on the ban list, then it was put there late Friday or early Saturday as that ip address was working Friday morning but not Saturday afternoon and has been working fine ever since I first signed up.

...you might be getting a dynamic IP address from your ISP? (just shooting in the dark)

Yes, with nearly all ISP's you're behind a NAT. They can then reuse addresses mapped to you (eg, they can have unlimited customers in a huge range that the customer sees, but only map active customers to real on-the-net addresses in the range they own).

Most ISP's have a block of IP addresses they show to the world, and randomly assign you one out of that block or range. How big that range is depends on the ISP, and blocking IP ranges sometimes can throw out the baby with the bathwater...I've really tried to avoid doing that on my forums, but some places are such trouble spots you almost can't avoid doing it a little. But when you do, you wind up essentially blocking an entire ISP's range - all their customers, in other words. It's a fair amount of work to get that one right even so - if you have a trouble spot, and just want to whack one ISP - you have to someone find out what their range is first so you do block all of that, but not a couple others (or random parts of others). It's a trick to get right is all I'm saying here.

I have a static IP address on that cable account, the same one that I have had for years.

It is not blocked by PMBug, so there is some other issue at work, although at the present time I have no clue what.

This dialup connection has a dynamic address which changes every time I go online.

Can you hear me now?

<Please try accessing the forum now with your cable account.>

I am hopeful that I resolved the issue (overly broad user agent matching string in the ban list).

Ok, when I get where I can access the cable account, I will try again. Might not be until tomorrow, though.

Update: Now working. Thanks.
