yeah we would have garage based fusion power everywhere by now and all those 'wars' would become pointless .........

Imagine this:

If rather than going to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, we borrowed those trillions of dollars to harness solar power for the United States. We would now be completely and totally energy independent and could sell a huge portion of our carbon based resources.

I recently read one negative article about solar powered houses. It appears that roof mounted solar panels increase the chance of total destruction of a structure if the structure catches fire. The solar panels impede and endanger fire fighters enough that is it more effective to let the structure burn to the ground while the fire fighters protect surrounding structures from potential destruction.

then rebuild it so that it doesnt catch fire (-:

and when did firefighters even go onto the roof of a burning house unless theres a live victim to rescue and no ladders to make it safe to do a rescue ?

seems like an odd argument to try and make ........

Actually, he is correct. There was a warehouse in California with a flat roof covered in panels. When the structure caught fire, the panels kept firemen from being able to get enough water on the areas from above and the building burned to the ground.

However, rack mounted systems on the ground pose no such danger. At NASA, where I work as a civilian contractor, we have acre upon acre of panels providing a large percentage of the power we use in administrative buildings and laboratories. Naturally, extremely power intensive things like purification of titanium alloys in arc furnaces need a bit more than is feasible from solar alone, but you get the idea. Our three primary solar farms are incredibly efficient and need little to no maintenance once installed.

Fair point ancona but this thread is about homes not flat roofed warehouses.

In Blighty we fit low melt plastic panels into warehouse roofs so they can burn clean cos we dont see a problem with em burning as long as we get the people out. Apparently fumes and black smoke make rescue more difficult and death more probable ....

I know this as a builder of such places and not as a firefighter.

And when are you going to start using your ex NASA solar panels ? (-;
