Protecting silver from tarnish

I don't bother. If it tarnishes then it tarnishes. It's value is inate whether it shines or turns completely gray.

straight ammonia brings back the shine in silver.

vinegar or salt will restore the shine of copper.

then you can do it again! :)
 
The things that remove tarnish do so by removing the silver sulfide (the tarnish). Costs you a tiny bit of weight. Prevention is better. Keep your Ag away from sulfur compounds (skin oil, sweat, H2S in the air, onions, rotten eggs). Most airtight vessels will serve there. Prevention is usually better than cure.
 
tarnish is not so bad. watch tho for black pit marks.

Buy a jug of E-Z-Est coin cleaner.

Dip and rinse in under 10 seconds and brand new it will look.

Buying rolls of constitutional silver, I often come across very dark coins. I trow them in a plastic container and swirl them around until they shine.

If one is extremely dark/black I cook 'em between foil in salted water and brand new abracadabra. Do not leave cleaned coins out while cleaning others. You will smell the sulfur.

That's good news. My wife recently used that method (she found on the internet) on a silver service set she had inherited from her grandparents that was badly tarnished. The service looks awesome now, but I fretted that the process was stripping some of the silver content away.
