Benjamen,
That is the problem today, people truly believe we are a democracy. The truth is that we are a constitutional republic. We elect representatives to speak on our behalf in the House of Representatives and Senate. In places like Californica, where you have a referendum process whereby a simple majority of citizen votes, they can change the constitution of their state to mandate anything they want. That is why it is the most fucked up state in the union. Democracy does NOT work. PERIOD.

While I agree we are supposed to be a constitutional republic, we stopped being one in pratice a long time ago.

Root problems:
1) 16th amendment in 1913 allowing federal taxes: feeds the federal governement (hand in hand with the creation of the FED)
2) 17th amendment in 1913 making U.S. Senators directly elected took power from the state level and concentrated in Washington
3) Generally ignoring the 10th amendment under the guise of the Commerce Clause
4) Lobbying should not be legal (can you say legalized bribery?)

Long, but good article; here are a few quotes that amused me:

"Six people control 95% of the news media and you're being told what they want you to believe. That doesn't mean it's news."

"In 1914, Argentina had the third-highest GDP in the world. Based on agriculture and metal wealth and the educational level of its people, Argentina still should be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. It's not, and hasn't been for 100 years now. The reason is 100 years of incredible stupidity in government."

"But the property is unfortunately on U.S. Forest Service land, which means jumping through 67 hoops and stumbling through a bureaucratic minefield to get anything done."
