She added: “If e-cigarettes continue to help people quit smoking, as they have done to date, they could potentially save tens of thousands of lives and millions of pounds.”

The UK’s Electronic Cigarette Industry Trade Association also welcomed the findings yesterday. Its chief scientific officer Tom Pruen said: “There could be huge long-term benefits to taxpayers and the NHS as well as to former smokers and their families.”

All the major tobacco companies – including UK-based British American Tobacco and Imperial Tobacco – have invested in the development of e-cigarettes and all now have products on sale in Britain.
