Well, He'll never attempt to steal again. That's for sure.
In many states a crime that results in a death all co-conspirators may be charged with murder.
IDK about the Socialist State of California where crimes are legal.

  • A black market has expanded and states are tightening up laws related to the reselling of the parts.
  • In the background, an increasing amount of people are being killed while trying to steal the parts.
 


Sounds like a self-correcting problem to me.

Multimillion dollar catalytic converter theft ring operated out of Philadelphia towing business, prosecutors say​

A Philadelphia towing company has been accused of running an organized criminal enterprise which purchased millions of dollars’ worth of stolen catalytic converters from thieves to sell at a profit, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said TDI Towing purchased $8.2 million dollars’ worth of stolen catalytic converters from “cutters,” a name given to the thieves who steal them, and later resold them with an 8% markup.

The converters, which reduce pollution and toxic gas from a vehicle’s emissions, contain valuable precious metals such as palladium, platinum and rhodium.

They'd be better off, simply to find a hack to bypass the closed-loop sensor and use the car.

This is what happens when we make average goods needlessly complex, just to satisfy government regulators. And THEN, depend on offshore supply chains.
