Well, He'll never attempt to steal again. That's for sure.
In many states a crime that results in a death all co-conspirators may be charged with murder.
IDK about the Socialist State of California where crimes are legal.

The department said the Excursion driver was asleep when the smaller vehicle pulled up and one of the four people inside got out and began sawing the catalytic converter off the Ford.

“The victim woke up from the sound, turned the car on, put the vehicle in reverse, and felt a bump like she ran something over,” the department said. “She stopped immediately, leaving the suspect on the ground after running him over.”

The driver then called 911 to get medical help for the suspect.

The suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital. The other three people in the smaller vehicle were detained. No names were released.

Multimillion dollar catalytic converter theft ring operated out of Philadelphia towing business, prosecutors say​

A Philadelphia towing company has been accused of running an organized criminal enterprise which purchased millions of dollars’ worth of stolen catalytic converters from thieves to sell at a profit, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said TDI Towing purchased $8.2 million dollars’ worth of stolen catalytic converters from “cutters,” a name given to the thieves who steal them, and later resold them with an 8% markup.

The converters, which reduce pollution and toxic gas from a vehicle’s emissions, contain valuable precious metals such as palladium, platinum and rhodium.

They'd be better off, simply to find a hack to bypass the closed-loop sensor and use the car.

This is what happens when we make average goods needlessly complex, just to satisfy government regulators. And THEN, depend on offshore supply chains.

Car parts thieves have a new target: Criminals shift attention from catalytic converters to this​

Drivers of petrol and hybrid cars can breathe a sigh of relief after new figures showed the crimewave of thieves hacking catalytic converters off the underside of vehicles has almost dissipated entirely.

During epidemic levels seen in 2021, over 7,000 motors were targeted for their catalytic converters and the precious metals they contained.

Just five years ago, gangs were regularly stealing them in broad daylight by sawing and smashing them off exhaust systems while vehicles were parked on driveways, the roadside and even in public car parks - often causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and writing off cars in the process.
