That's a big mistake in many ways. Bigger than the Susan B. Anthony dollar and New Coke.
 
I am wondering if the decision was prompted by a need to relieve stress (demand) on the LBMA's silver vault stock.
 
The Spanish did the same thing although some of it was due to corruption. Many colonial officials who stole and skimmed their share and were found out no longer had need of a hat.
