Four-day working week 'more productive': UK study

A four-day working week is more productive for most staff and companies than the traditional five days, one of the biggest trials of its kind conducted in the UK reported on Tuesday.

Over 60 firms in Britain took part in the six-month experiment allowing almost 3,000 employees to work one day less per week while retaining the same salary.

I went looking for the actual study to see their methodology and such and it doesn't appear to be something that was published in an academic journal. It looks like the study is published by an advocacy group:

Some details I found on various pages of their website:

To see the actual research results requires filling a form and giving them an email address. I declined.

From the link:

The ChatGPT revolution opens the door to a four-day week by providing a major productivity boost for swathes of jobs, according to a Nobel Prize-wining labor economist.

Schools around here do 4 day weeks. It saves them big bucks.

You're already there at the job... 2 hours more is a drop in the bucket.

The other 3 days... you don't have to heat the building as much. Electric is off. Janitorial is easier. Reduced traveling and traffic issues.

You get one extra day to get things done with a 3 day weekend.

... 2 hours more is a drop in the bucket. ...
The program being advocated above doesn't ask folks to work 40 hours/week on a 4-10s basis. It's advocating a 32 hour work week on a 4-8s basis. They want 100% of the pay for 80% of the time (with a promise that folks will still be 100% productive).

I own 2 businesses and usually work everyday. A 4 day work week would be a vacation.

From back in July:

Rep Takano's bill was introduced here in the USA in 2021 and died. Reintroduced in 2023 with 7 co-sponsors, but doesn't appear to have been discussed in committee yet:

It's like working short handed where everybody does multiple jobs to make up for the labor shortage. Lots of mistakes are made.
