I made some crab apple jelly today along with a loaf of bread to go along with it.

I have a large number of crab apple trees on this property that I moved to almost 2 years ago. I used medium sized crab apples today. I have other much larger sized crab apples that are not ripe yet so I'm hoping to make a larger batch once those area ready.

I was surprised how good the jelly is. Still waiting for the bread to cool.

The jelly basically tastes like apple jelly with a nice tiny bit of tartness. A little bit more tartness would have been welcomed to me but I can't complain it's really good.

If anyone wants to see the process I used, here is the video I followed:

Bread recipe, I skipped the powdered milk and substituted butter for the vegetable shortening. I've made this recipe previously with good results.

Oh man! That looks good. It is that time of year. I’ve never made apple jelly or preserves but will someday. My bro had a crabapple tree but he moved before i got around to it. I made some black currant jam today and water bathed it. Very yum. Will be eaten on biscuits this winter.

Had several around the neighborhood growing up. Both large and small ones.

Small ones worked pretty well as slingshot ammunition and we used the big ones in crabapple fights.

Just throw 'em at each other. Usually big kids vs little kids.

Big kids always won. They had a habit of catching the ones we threw and throwing them back, but harder.

That is until one day, unbeknownst to the big kids, us little kids turned it into a rotten egg fight.

They caught a few and quickly ran to the house in defeat. Lol

None of the neighborhood kids were allowed to have crabapple fights after that. Lol

That's the only use I remember them being good for. Had no idea there was any way to eat 'em.

I am thinking homemade cider.

I might have to look in to that. The thought never occurred to me but might be a good use for some of the larger apples.

We would place crab apples on the road for cars to run over. Or throw them at passing cars. Pretty sure I also shot them using my slingshot as well.

Oh the memories of the neighborhood wars. We had a rock fight going on for quite a while. It was mostly lobbing small rocks over the garage trying to blindly hit opponents on the other side while they did the same. That came to an end when one kid got hit square in the forehead and had to get stitches.
