It's a crime. (no pun intended)

We had a better system, back when the jury announced a verdict, the judge gave sentence, and the bailiff took the killer out behind the courthouse, and sent him climbing.

Yeah, we had to pay a few hangmen to come and stand by, and do nothing if the jury acquitted. Small potatoes compared to the cost of housing a sex-fiend murderer for forty years in the Crossbar Hilton.
