Most of you probably know the liberty dollar story, but here is a brief summary (if you know it, continue reading below the line)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Dollar

It gets even worse, the FBI calls these actions of Mr von NotHaus domestic terrorism, this is a FBI press release:
h xx p://www.fbi.gov/charlotte/press-releases/2011/defendant-convicted-of-minting-his-own-currency

Ron Paul has shown sympathy for Mr von NotHaus:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the news: Yesterday BVNH was a guest on the Alex Jones show. I know AJ is a sensationalist and hard to listen to but that's not the point here.

Bernard von NotHaus told AJ that he is probably facing 22 years in jail for practicing civil disobedience. It's even questionable whether he really broke the law.
He is asking YOU to write letters to his judge in order to make him change his mind.

Here is the adress of the judge:
United States District Court
The Honorable Judge Richard Voorhees
704-350-7440
250 Charles R. Jonas Federal Bldg.
401 West Trade Street
Charlotte , NC 28202

Please friends of liberty, write letters to help this man, every letter counts!

you can also write emails to Bernard: bernard@libertydollar.org

Here is the video from the Alex Jones show from 1-23-12, the interview starts at 3:50

Part 2 of the interview, just ignore the ranting of AJ, Bernard starts talking at 6:00

He should never have used the word dollar on the rounds.

I don't believe that writing letters to the judge is going to affect the outcome. $.02

Maybe, but this proposed punishment is just insane. So is calling him a domestic terrorist.

No argument there. If that rhetoric was just, the Bernank and Timmy should both be renditioned in Gitmo.

You really have to read the fbi press release that's just so over the top.
It's not listed on google by the way, took me 15 minutes to find it:

To embed YouTube videos, you must post the URL that conforms to the required format:

DailyPaul is posting a "youtu.be" formatted URL underneath videos. Just click that link and then copy/paste the address and remove the "&feature=youtu.be" part.

He knew the risks of going head to head.. This is why I don't advocate putting yourself out there and getting famous. You put a big target on your back. Just stack your coins and treat it as an investment.

BVNH was jousting at windmills in my opinion. There is no way to win if the FedGov wants to put you in jail. They can fabricate any evidence they want, they have unlimited resources and can hire the best lawyers. They can seize all of your assets and force you in to the position of having to use a public defender. Remember, we do not have a justice system, we have a legal system. BVNH put the word Dollar on his "medallions" which was a big mistake. He should have used trade units, credit units or whatever else besides "dollar". When he was warned the first time, he should have ceased using dollar and changed to something else. Instead, he was arrogant and thought he could win in a trial with the FedGov as Plaintiff.

He guessed wrong.

I don't think that BVNH was wrong for using dollars since the word dollar is older than the United States. William Shakespeare uses dollars in one of his plays. Also there are other private currencies that use the word dollars like disney dollars. Another example is the gun dollar sold by buds gun shop which is made of silver, uses the word dollars and the dollar sign. It also has the same obverse design as the liberty dollar.

Interesting background/story on BVNH from the New York Times of all places:

Guilt by association ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_fallacy#Guilt_by_association_as_an_ad_hominem_fallacy ), always great:

"Now jump ahead to 2004. A detective in Asheville, N.C., learned one day that a client of a credit union had to tried to pass a "fake coin" at one its local branches. An investigation determined that some business acquaintances of Mr. von NotHaus were, court papers say, allied with the sovereign citizens' movement, an anti-government group."

Since the metal value of these coins is greater than the denomination, why in the world would someone try to spend them like they were regular currency? Something smells funny with that story.

Does "business acquaintances" mean anyone who bought one of his coins?

I'm sure there are some restaurants, hotels, bars and local businesses in Washington DC that have a plethora of unsavory "business acquaintances".

Yeah, I hear they are called "politicians".

Sounds better than expected. It was unrealistic that he would be left completely without punishment.

At least the judge had the wisdom to return the inventory and not completely step on his dick with a heavy prison time.

Retire that judge immediately and find one who understands how damaging precious metal conspiracies really are

philosophical rather than criminal ffftt:
