Pope Francis in critical condition after a 'respiratory crisis,' Vatican says

Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized for over a week, is in critical condition after a "prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis," the Vatican said Saturday.

The pope is "more unwell than yesterday," the Vatican said in a statement.

The 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized at the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome on Feb. 14 for treatment for bronchitis, and was later diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection and is being treated for double pneumonia. The Vatican first announced he had bronchitis on Feb. 6.

Looking back at Pope Francis' impact on the Catholic Church

Rome — He was a populist leader, often referred to as the "People's Pope." As pontiff, Francis, who died Monday at age 88, sought to bring the Church closer to the people, stating early in his papacy that he wanted to have a poorer Church "for the poor." He was known for being driven around in unflashy cars and for making folksy gestures, like taking trips into Rome to buy an item at the store.

What are the church's rites after the death of a pope and the election of a new one?

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The death of a pope starts a centuries-old ritual involving sacred oaths by the cardinals electing a successor, the piercing of ballots with a needle and thread after they're counted, and then burning them to produce either the white or black smoke to signal if there's a new leader for the world's 1.3 billion Catholics.

The election itself is shrouded in secrecy, with cardinals forbidden from communicating with the outside world what happened during the voting in the conclave behind the frescoed walls of the Sistine Chapel.

I see the title and I see the posting date of February 22, 2025.

Strange

Actually as weird as that pope.

First, he went into the hospital for an illness. He was released from the hospital a little while ago as he appeared to be doing better. Died early this morning. Didn't want to start a new thread so I edited the thread title and just kept the original thread going.

A bit o/t but can you imagine what secrets the Vatican Archive and Library hold. The truth about religion. The truth about aliens. Who knows how much the world order would change if we actually knew the truth about these things.

Here's a few links I plan on playing around in when time permits.

The Pope's mysterious army | DW Documentary

Apr 18, 2025 #vatican #dwdocumentary #dwdocs

It’s the smallest and most mysterious army in the world: the Pontifical Swiss Guard. The film accompanies these men of faith and combat, from their recruitment in Switzerland to their military training in the heart of the Vatican.
Made up of 150 men, this elite corps lives in barracks in the heart of Vatican City. All must be Swiss nationals and devout Catholics. All have sworn to fight to the death to protect their faith and the Holy Father.
They are heirs to a 500-year-old tradition in which the Pope’s protection and security were assured by mercenaries from Switzerland.
Trained to wield both halberds and semi-automatic assault rifles, the Swiss Guards form a unique army. But who are they really? What motivates these young boys to join this military and religious corps? An insight into a world usually closed to the cameras.

Zelensky given front-row seat in breach of Vatican protocol

The Vatican overturned protocol to ensure that Volodymyr Zelensky was given a front-row seat at the funeral of Pope Francis, along with Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron.

Mr Zelenksy arrived in Rome with his wife, Olena Zelenska, amid expectations of a breakthrough in peace talks in Ukraine.

The leader of the war-torn country was given a spontaneous round of applause as he took his seat in St Peter’s Square after briefly meeting Mr Trump for their first talks since their Oval Office bust-up.

It seems that the Vatican made special arrangements to ensure Mr Zelensky was given a prominent spot in the limelight at a ceremony where most leaders were seated according to their country’s name and whether they were heads of state or government.
