Biometrics in general are the very worst idea in security ever thought of, from fingerprints to retinas to whatever...
Easy to fool, and whatcha going to do - get a new thumb with a new print if someone steals your original? Stupid to have a pword you cannot change.

So far, they're all pretty easy to fool, one way or another. That's because they actually don't work that well to begin with, so they have to set the acceptance threshold very loose.

Sigh - technical solutions to social problems have a pretty high failure rate no matter the venue.
 
...well if the researchers were able to use genetics algorithms, to get incrementally better approximations of stored "retinal codes", it speaks volumes about the indolence of the original system's designers! Haven't they even hashed stored "retinal codes", which would render them secure against such a trivial method of brute-force attack???? I am not into cryptography, but at least I understand some absolute basics! And that is at level crypto-101...

Imagine, if it would be possible to generate a synthetic cryptographic key, compare it against the hashed key that you are trying to break/reverse engineer, and then use about 200 iterations of the algorithm, giving us results that are increasingly-closer to the original password... It would take some really stupid crypto-specialist, to design something like that...
