I was a bit shocked to see the price on these things now. I guess inflation hits everywhere. I think I paid around $250 for one (brand new from the manufacturer) a decade ago. Old thread on them here:

You can fry eggs on my car's dashboard in August if you park in the sun with the windows up.

Many years ago, when I was a nerdy teenager, I drove over to a friend's house one Texas summer and forgot a 5.25" floppy disk on the dashboard of my car. When I found it later, it looked like a waffle. There is a grid of nylon string under the black plastic sleeve which melted and drooped in the heat of the sun. The amazing thing was that the disk still worked. Floppy drives on the computer were still able to read it.

Solar heat works. I've cooked chili and paella in my Sun Oven. It doesn't matter what the ambient temperature is either.

We're coming over to your house for dinner!

Nearing Black Friday time again so I went to see what deal might be out there on a SunOven and ... wow inflation....

** This is an old post - see below for the new/current sale/deal. **

These run $420 on amazon.com. Currently $380 on sale from the manufacturer:

One year later...

amazon.com has a lot of solar ovens for sale, but I didn't see the SunOven among them.

You can definitely make your own much cheaper. I have done so myself. I've also owned and used a SunOven and it's excellent.

At these prices, I'd try making my own solar oven...
That was my first thought too!

It's like when I went to the music store and saw a Gibson L5 guitar for $5,000!

I thought 'Heck I could build one myself for that price!' So I did!

I found a plan (Benedetto) and spent $10,000 on tools and viola!

I did it!

Let me know if anyone has a solar oven plan!

You can build one out of a cardboard box and aluminum foil. It won't be airtight and well insulated like the SunOven, but you get what you pay for. The SunOven can easily reach temps above 350F even in cold weather. That's a safe temp for cooking just about anything. Homemade ovens will have issues with temperature leaks and likely won't reach that 350F. YMMV!
