Trump is correct in that at one time the country was run on tariffs. That was long ago. Long before we became a socialist country. In order for tariffs to work today you would need to get rid of life as we know it in the US. Just an example of a few things.

Social security
Welfare
Food stamps
public education
the grant program to anyone or anything
All of the spy agencies
The FBI, CIA, and most other 3 letter agencies.
In fact just about every agency in the fed gov would need to come to an end. Thats how we know trump isn't serious about eliminating the income tax or running the country on tariffs. If he is serious then he is stuck in the past without taking reality into account.
We will get better deals than we had with the rest of the world, unfortunately once the left steals the next election politicians will sell us out once again.

An across the board 10% tariff as a toll makes sense as long as fiscal discipline is exercised.

What's needed is tariffs for all nations equal to whatever % it takes to make the price of all goods and services equal everywhere in the World.
