Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican who ran the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration from 2001 to 2003, opposed the initiative and urged law enforcement agencies to "stand firm" against it. The initiative's opponents also included the state's two Republican senators, Tom Cotton and John Boozman; Republican gubernatorial candidate Sarah Huckabee Sanders; and organizations such as the Arkansas Family Council, Safe and Secure Communities, and Save Arkansas From Epidemic.
"They're going to sell this as something that's going to help law enforcement," Hutchison said at a police convention in August, noting that Issue 4 earmarked 15 percent of marijuana tax revenue for "a fund to support law enforcement stipends" and 5 percent for drug courts. "So once again, they're selling a harmful drug to the citizens of Arkansas based upon promises that looks [sic] good. Now, those promises might be a reality, but I think that you've got to be prepared for this debate….It will increase the usage of marijuana. I believe that marijuana is a harmful drug. It is as simple as that."
Huckabee pushed a similar line. "I don't think that with the drug epidemic that we have across this state, frankly across the country, that adding and giving more access to that does anything to benefit Arkansas," she told reporters last month, "so I certainly wouldn't be supportive of that."

LOL..........you have almost perfectly described my heritage and identity......redneck ...hillbilly....ozarks....baldknobbers.....100mi from arkansas....and many other sorted unsavory character types i have in my family .......i have it all from holy roller snake handlers and moonshiners to preachers ......my parents drug themselves out of the backwoods and got educated .....so i have a unique ability to translate between hillbilly n PHD ......i just got a kick out of your descriptionsMissouri and oklahoma,a,few,years back , especially oklahoma , i lived there about 14 years in the 70-80’s and i learnt’ the definition of redneck and back then this tune was like the oklahoma National Anthem , we dont smoke marijuana in muskogee
so yeah , when them redneck hillbillies went legal , and now are predicted to surpass both Colorado and Washington in cannabis sales , it was a big surprise
not that Missouri lacks in hillbillies , the Ozarks and the Baldknobbers are legendary , most of them hang out within a 100 miles of the Arkansas border
but yeah , speaking of medicinal uses , good medicine is what unites all human beings
the former Attorney General of Kansas , Bob Stephenson , was a staunch supporter of drug laws
but when his mom was diagnosed with cancer and soon died , Bob later said that he wished he had access to cannabis to give his dying mother after she went through those harsh chemo treatments , the nausea is overwhelming
since his moms death , Bob is now a staunch supporter and advocates for the legalization of medical cannabis in Kansas
so yes , cannabis has many medical uses
