Trump digs in his heels on tariffs — with major implications for the US dollar

Market strategists were weighing in on President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address late Tuesday and coming away with some important implications for the U.S. dollar.

In a nutshell, Trump gave no sign that he might relent on his current tariff agenda. The president’s new temporary global tariffs of 10% — which came in reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision Friday to strike down previous tariffs that were based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act — went into effect earlier Tuesday. Trump has threatened to push those new tariffs up to 15%.

Opinion: Congress must define a new 21st century tariff doctrine

The Supreme Court’s decision that the sweeping tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act exceed the executive’s authority is a welcome restraint on the president’s abuse of tariff statutes. But the job remains only partially done.

The Supreme Court decision puts the ball squarely back in Congress’ court to complete the job of defining a new tariff agenda.

The Trump administration’s sweeping and volatile tariffs undermined the global system that had been in place for decades. President Trump had imposed the highest tariffs since 1934, increasing prices for American businesses, workers, farmers, ranchers, and families.

Opinion: Congress must define a new 21st century tariff doctrine
The current Congress would be lucky to be able to agree on what day of the week it is.
....and you think they are capable of enacting Century defining laws on tariffs? Lol

If we wait on a dem controlled Congress, all they will do is make our tariffs zero while other nations keep their tariffs on our exports.

You know, their version of supposed "free trade"? Lol

The current Congress would be lucky to be able to agree on what day of the week it is.

I agree 100%.

Last night when T claimed he didn't need congress for anything the speaker of the house jumped outta his seat and clapped like a retarded loon. For anyone to clap when their boss tells them they are no longer needed in the workplace speaks volumes.

Then we have him (MJ) sending congress home so they can't vote in budget stuff and Epstein crap. This too speaks volumes.

And we also have the fake ass Christianity. Johnson proclaims to have a relationship with God. That's laughable. His God is T. And what ever T proclaims is gospel.

It's a shame how far congress has fallen. And it sure as hell isn't all due to T. It's been going on for years. And I don't see things turning around anytime soon. I fact, I things will keep getting worse until we get a majority of D's in there. Don't you agree?

Unless it means that he supports Trump's actions because he agrees that most of Congress is a detriment to Trump's agenda?

. I fact, I things will keep getting worse until we get a majority of D's in there. Don't you agree?
Absolutely not.

Dems will just do what they did under Biden and Obama.
....and that's no bueno too.

He's supposed to represent congress not the prez. He's never going to make it as a union rep.

And I was thinking we could agree on something
He can represent congress while also believing the potus to be correct.
.....and why on Earth would I agree that getting dems in will fix anything when dems are the ones who f'ed everything up for the 4 years between Trump terms?

Do you actually agree with their open border policy?

I'm trying to get you to laugh.

Do you actually agree with their open border policy?

No. But it's really not a R or D thing. It's a them thing. Those elected lunatics kick cans down the road all day, every day. Then come election time they bring the cans up as talking points. The immigration issue should have been fixed a long time ago. Both sides need to come together and actually do something other than talk crazy about nonsensical stuff.

As for tariffs, they (both sides) need to pass real laws and take back their job and responsibilities.

Trump’s tariff chaos drives British businesses into arms of China

Donald Trump’s tariffs are pushing British businesses closer to China in a blow to the US president’s ambitions of isolating Beijing on the world stage.

UK companies have loosened ties with the US while targeting new territories including China, Japan, Australia and a number of EU nations, according to a new survey of 2,000 firms.

Three quarters of firms reported that US sales had fallen or flatlined by the fourth quarter of last year. In contrast, exports to nine other countries jumped, with the number of manufacturers reporting increased sales to China doubling over the year.

The Growing Together Alliance, a grouping of regional business bodies that commissioned the survey from YouGov with Manchester Airports Group (MAG), said the president’s trade wars were forcing UK firms to reconsider their allegiances.

FedEx says it will return any refunds it gets from Trump tariffs to customers

Delivery giant FedEx said it will return to customers any refunds it gets from President Trump’s tariffs after the Supreme Court ruled them unlawful last week.

FedEx is among more than 1,000 companies that have filed lawsuits with the U.S. Court of International Trade to recoup the costs of Trump’s tariffs, mostly filed before the Supreme Court ruling.

“If refunds are issued to FedEx, we will issue refunds to the shippers and consumers who originally bore those charges,” FedEx said in a statement Thursday. “When that will happen and the exact process for requesting and issuing refunds will depend in part on future guidance from the government and the court.”

Tariff Refund Delays Could Cost Taxpayers $700 Million a Month

We wrote last week that the Trump administration might renege on its multiple promises to quickly refund IEEPA tariffs now that the Supreme Court has invalidated them—a new court filing unfortunately indicates that the government is doing just that. As we’ll show today, delays could cost US taxpayers billions of dollars in needless interest payments on tariff collections that the government must now repay.

Judge orders US to stop calculating IEEPA tariffs in refund push

(Bloomberg) -- A US judge has ordered that the Trump administration halt a key step in the tariff payment process in order to make any refunds simpler after the US Supreme Court struck down the president’s global levies.

In an order on Wednesday, Judge Richard Eaton, who sits on the federal trade court in New York, ordered Customs and Border Protection to stop calculating President Donald Trump’s emergency tariffs on importers’ customs paperwork. He also questioned why the government was continuing to do so after the Supreme Court ruled the tariffs illegal.

Major US trade groups are pressing the Trump administration to distribute tariff refunds 'en masse'

  • Major trade groups in the US are trying to hasten tariff refunds to small businesses.
  • They argue that the refunds are "existential" for small businesses and startups.
  • The Supreme Court ruled in March that Trump's tariffs were illegally imposed.
US trade groups are pressing President Donald Trump and his administration to quickly pay tariff refunds to small businesses.

In a joint press release, the Consumer Technology Association and the US Chamber of Commerce said they had filed a brief on Wednesday in V.O.S. Selections, Inc. v. Trump, a lawsuit by small businesses seeking refunds from Trump's sweeping tariffs.

Trump’s loss of $1.7 trillion in tariff revenue will send the national debt to $58 trillion by 2036, think tank projects

A landmark Supreme Court ruling against President Trump’s tariffs has cost the federal government an estimated $1.7 trillion in projected revenue through 2036, according to a new analysis by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), setting the United States on a course toward a national debt of $58 trillion within the next decade if the country continues its current rate of spending.

The nonpartisan fiscal watchdog, which released its findings on Tuesday, found that the court’s decision striking down tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) has altered the country’s fiscal trajectory in the direction of larger debts and deficits.

More than 20 states sue over new global tariffs Trump imposed after his stinging Supreme Court loss

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some two dozen states challenged President Donald Trump’s new global tariffs on Thursday, filing a lawsuit over import taxes he imposed after a stinging loss at the Supreme Court.

The Democratic attorneys general and governors in the lawsuit argue that Trump is overstepping his power with planned 15% tariffs on much of the world.

Trump has said the tariffs are essential to reduce America's longstanding trade deficits. He imposed duties under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 after the Supreme Court struck down tariffs he imposed last year under an emergency powers law.

Legal war over Trump tariffs still raging despite Supreme Court ruling

The war in the courts over tariff refunds took a key step forward this week as President Donald Trump's newly implemented tariffs are facing a new legal challenge, less than a month after the Supreme Court struck down Trump's sweeping "Liberation Day" tariffs.

Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act was foreclosed by the Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling last month, but, as Justice Brett Kavanaugh noted in his dissent, the president still has several options to impose tariffs under other laws. Kavanaugh also argued that sorting out refunds would be chaotic. Both of Kavanaugh's predictions are panning out, with Trump's renewed tariff efforts becoming the latest target of legal challenges.

Costco sued by customer over tariff refund

Costco Wholesale is being sued by a shopper looking to get his tariff costs back.

A lawsuit filed Wednesday in an Illinois federal court alleges that Costco owes its customers refunds related to tariffs deemed unlawful by the Supreme Court last month. The suit is seeking class-action status on behalf of Costco shoppers nationwide.

Costco increased product prices to offset the cost of tariffs, but it hasn’t promised shoppers a refund, said the lawsuit filed on behalf of Matthew Stockov, a Costco member who lives in Illinois. Shoppers won’t get a government refund directly, because they are not the importer of record, said the lawsuit. “The truly injured parties possess no direct avenue for redress,” alleged the lawsuit, which asks Costco for a refund on price increases related to tariffs, plus interest.

Senate Democrats introduce bill to refund Americans for costs linked to Trump tariffs

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) is leading Senate Democrats in introducing new legislation aimed at reimbursing Americans for higher costs tied to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

The proposal, known as the Tariff Refunds for Working Families Act, would establish a tax rebate program for individuals and families who have paid higher prices for groceries and everyday goods as a result of tariffs placed on imported products.
