On sweltering summer days, many are beating the heat with a trip to the sea -- but ocean safety is key to a great beach day. Matt Gutman joined lifeguards to get a rip current safety demonstration.

A rescue caught on camera unfolded at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz after sudden heavy surf threatened a boy in the water.

Is it really that dangerous? I mean its 100' wide. Just float and swim a bit to the side. Big deal. Unless you just suck at swimming.

Well of course, but the problem is that people often panic in such a situation.
.....and panic leads to extremely poor decision making.

Ignorance leads there too, because that's what typically got 'em into a rip currant in the first place.
