What's behind falling US approval in Africa and rising ratings of Russia and China?
This week, the US polling agency Gallup released approval ratings in Africa for some of the major powers, showing that the US approval rating in Africa has fallen to 56%, China is 2% ahead of the US, and 8% more Africans approve of Russia's leadership than a year ago.The US approval rating in Africa may have declined because Washington attaches conditions to its aid to countries on the continent tied to issues of human rights and democracy, while Africa's engagement with Russia and China is unconditional, Dr. Nicodemus Minde, Researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, Nairobi, told (https://en.sputniknews.africa/20240...g-ratings-of-russia-and-china-1066239758.html) Sputnik Africa.
"It [the US] is always perceived as this marauding power that is telling Africa what to do as opposed to China and Russia, where there are a lot of mutual engagements; of course, probably China and Russia still have an upper hand. But when they're interacting, we see there's some sort of mutuality in terms of engagement, almost on an equal basis and listening, as opposed to just dictating," he explained.
