I have some 1oz silver coins that are showing a slight copperish tinge around the edge. Is this common? Is this how .999 silver normally tarnishes?
 
Yes, it's fairly common - especially if you handle the coins directly with your bare hands. Silver reacts to sulphur - either in the air or in the oils of your skin. It doesn't affect the bullion value of the coin though.

It's best to keep silver coins inside a protective sleeve and/or handle with cotton gloves if you want to minimize tarnishing.
 
Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to clean it without ruining it's numismatic value?
 
Not that I'm aware of. Everything I've ever heard says not to try and clean tarnish. Let it be.
 
Can you tell me what metals don't tarnish for use on a wallet chain?

I would guess any of stainless steel, brass, nickel, titanium, aluminum?

And of course gold as 11C1P stated, but pure gold (24K) might be too soft to use for a chain that needs to hold your wallet.
