🇺🇸 Spirit Airlines is gone. 17,000 jobs. 34 years. Shutdown effective immediately.

In 2024, Elizabeth Warren celebrated blocking its merger with JetBlue as a win for consumers. The logic: stop the merger, protect competition, keep fares low.

What actually happened: Spirit filed bankruptcy twice anyway, couldn't survive soaring fuel costs from the Iran war, and no buyer materialized. The Trump administration tried a bailout. That also failed.

Warren's "win" didn't kill Spirit alone. But she handed a terminally ill airline a shovel and called it a rescue.

Spirit was based in Dania which is next to the FLL airport (Hollywood/Ft.Lauderdale) a former military base famed for the lost squadron of Flight 19. Dania is a quiet beach town with remnants of segregation leftover from the 50s and 60s. East of US1 is generally nice, clean older homes and apartments. West of US1 is the ghetto and light industry.

The beaches are good and crowded. There is an artificial reef of concrete jacks near shore which was one of my favorite places to SCUBA dive, spearfish and harvest lobster. I will never forget the time I was surrounded by bull sharks on a spearfishing dive. I did not immediately bring the fish to the boat and was holding them in my bug bag. Needless to say I believe Jesus walked on water because I did the same with a full pack back to the boat.

Probably one of the most well known businesses is Jaxon's Ice Cream Parlor which has been around since the 50s or 60s. It has a bunch of antiques in the restaurant and serves homemade ice cream in large portions. They were know for the "Kitchen Sink". The original owner was a character who wore a straw hat and red striped vest. His daughter runs the place now.

Spirit Airlines was a low cost carrier and obsolete business model that could not make enough money to stay in business. They had zero customer service. Stay away from airlines stocks. I don't know of anybody that buys them other than employees?
