I too have heard bad reports re eBay, LOTS of counterfeit Chinese junk... Especially re fake numismatic coins. Silver Eagles as well (fakes, but made of silver, IIRC).

BUT, I have never done any business on eBay, although ZH-er "Rocky Racoon" HAS had good results.

Caveat emptor. If you are going to buy on ebay, you need to know what you are doing (how to evaluate the product descriptions to ensure you are bidding on the real deal). I posted a bit about this a while back:
