Immigration raids in Los Angeles hit small business owners: 'It's worse than COVID'

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Juan Ibarra stands outside his fruit and vegetable outlet in Los Angeles' vast fresh produce market, the place in the city center where Hispanic restaurateurs, street vendors and taco truck operators buy supplies every day.

On Monday morning, the usually bustling market was largely empty. Since Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials began conducting immigration raids more than a week ago, including at a textile factory two blocks away, Ibarra said business has virtually dried up.

His street vendor customers are at home in hiding, while restaurant workers are too scared to travel to the market to pick up supplies. Most of the market's 300 workers who are in the U.S. illegally have stopped showing up.

ICE deports Army sergeant's wife—"They're taking Shirly"

The wife of a U.S. Army sergeant was detained in March by federal immigration agents outside her workplace in Texas before being deported to Honduras last month.

Newsweek has contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for comment.

This case highlights the impact of immigration enforcement on U.S. military families, which lack guaranteed protection from detention or deportation. According to the advocacy group Fwd.us, as many as 80,000 undocumented spouses or parents of military personnel may currently reside in the United States.

Schwarzenegger: If you’re an immigrant in the US you should ‘behave like a guest’

Arnold Schwarzenegger says immigrants in America need to treat the country as if they’re houseguests and do everything they can to “keep things clean.”

“I just think the world of the great kind of history that we have with immigrants in America,” the bodybuilder-turned “Terminator” star-turned-California’s former Republican governor said Tuesday on ABC’s “The View.”

“But the key thing also is, at the same time, that we got to do things legal — that is the important thing,” Schwarznegger, who was born in Austria before immigrating to the U.S. in 1968, said when asked by “View” co-host Joy Behar whether he had a “visceral reaction” to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

Straight Down The Middle: Trump v. CASA - The Birthright Citizenship Case

Jun 28, 2025
The Court finally decided its birthright citizenship case -- without ruling on birthright citizenship. Instead, the majority slammed the brakes on nationwide injunctions. Is the ruling a victory for the Constitution, as Trump calls it, or a threat to the rule of law, as Justice Jackson said in dissent? I break it down.

French police puncture migrant boats at sea for first time

Credit: BBC
French police have punctured Channel migrants’ boats at sea for the first time in a change of tactics backed by Yvette Cooper.

Officers entered the sea on a beach near Boulogne-sur-Mer on Friday armed with knives to puncture the dinghies in water that was shallow enough for the migrants to wade back to shore.

Dozens of migrants, including some women and children, had to give up their attempt to reach the UK as the boat started to deflate and sink.

It is understood the knife puncturing is part of initial trials by the French to establish which tactics are most effective in stopping migrants leaving.

Ms Cooper, the Home Secretary, said it was a “different” and “welcome” strategy that was part of wider plans for French border police and gendarmes to start intervening in shallow waters within 300 metres of the shore to stop migrants’ boats leaving.

The bombshell revelation from Reuters comes after White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller set an aggressive quota of 3,000 immigration arrests per day in late May, following through on Trump's campaign promise to carry out what he called the "largest domestic deportation operation" in U.S. history.
