Trump is bringing white South Africans to the US as refugees. Why?​

The Trump administration is set to relocate a small number of white South Africans to the US next week, marking the beginning of a controversial program designed to resettle a minority group claiming persecution at the hands of their Black-led government.

The move comes as part of a fast-tracked application process initiated following President Trump's announcement of the relocation effort in February.

This initiative stands in stark contrast to the administration's broader anti-migrant stance, which has seen the suspension of various refugee programs and a halt to arrivals from regions including Iraq, Afghanistan, and much of sub-Saharan Africa.

The prioritization of these South African cases has drawn criticism from refugee advocacy groups, raising questions about the criteria being used to determine eligibility and the apparent disparity in treatment compared to other displaced populations.

Trump admin poised to accept luxury jet as gift for Trump from Qatar: Sources​

In what may be the most valuable gift ever extended to the United States from a foreign government, the Trump administration is preparing to accept a super luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet from the royal family of Qatar -- a gift that is to be available for use by President Donald Trump as the new Air Force One until shortly before he leaves office, at which time ownership of the plane will be transferred to the Trump presidential library foundation, sources familiar with the proposed arrangement told ABC News.

The gift is expected to be announced next week, when Trump visits Qatar on the first foreign trip of his second term, according to sources familiar with the plans.

Trump toured the plane, which is so opulently configured it is known as "a flying palace," while it was parked at the West Palm Beach International Airport in February.

Trump proposes to cut food boxes for low-income seniors, a move that ‘hurts’ thousands of Pennsylvanians, advocates say​

President Donald Trump’s proposed federal budget would eliminate funding for a small but effective anti-hunger program that provides boxes of food that help nourish and sustain low-income senior citizens throughout Pennsylvania and the nation.

Scrapping the more than 50-year-old senior food box plan would hurt older Pennsylvanians with scant resources, according to Stuart Haniff, executive director of the Pittsburgh-based nonprofit, Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, which represents a network of 18 food banks across the state — including Share Food Program and Philabundance in Philadelphia — that administer the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which provides the senior boxes.

Comey under investigation for ‘86 47’ social media post, Trump team says​

James B. Comey, the former director of the FBI, is under investigation over an image he posted on Instagram of seashells arranged to read “86 47,” which the Trump administration said it views as a threat against the president.

Comey, whom President Donald Trump fired during his first term in office, deleted the post and denied it was intended to communicate a violent message.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem accused Comey of calling for Trump’s assassination, writing on X on Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service were “investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.” FBI Director Kash Patel said his agency would “provide all necessary support” as part of the investigation.

Former mob killer leaves crime behind to become New Jersey councilman​

John Alite has big plans for Englishtown, New Jersey, a small hamlet best known for potatoes, a drag racing strip, and the Battle of Monmouth during the revolutionary wars.

But not everyone is certain they want Alite, 62, having a say over municipal matters in the town of about 2,350 people, where he was appointed a council member earlier this year and comes up for confirmation early next month.

The reason is an unusual one: Alite’s background – about which he is open – as a former member of the Gambino crime family with a long history of violence, murder and extortion.

For Alite once served as a top “earner” for John “the Teflon Don” Gotti, and later for his son John Gotti Jr. But after getting picked up in Brazil, where he was held for two years fighting extradition, Alite turned cooperating government witness against the younger Gotti, and pleaded guilty to racketeering charges, including two murders.

Anthony Scaramucci claims Elon Musk thinks ‘Trump is an idiot’​

Donald Trump’s former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci has claimed that Elon Musk thinks the president “is an idiot.”

Scaramucci, who spent 11 days as Trump’s White House communications director in 2017 before he was fired, was speaking at the U.K.’s Hay Festival on Thursday.

“Musk thinks Trump's an idiot,” Scaramucci said. “And let me tell you how I know, because Musk doesn't think like we do.”

The former Wall Street financier made the remarks while speaking at the annual arts and literary festival, which The Independent is a sponsor. He was being interviewed by his podcast co-host Alastair Campbell, a long-time adviser and press secretary to former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair.
