Scientists have developed a first-of-its-kind smart underwear to track how often people actually fart.
Until now, tracking human farts in studies has mainly relied on participants' self-reporting their flatulence, which has been unreliable as people tend to forget, miscount, or don’t consider tiny gas releases. Now, the new smart underwear enables tracking flatulence by monitoring gut microbiome hydrogen release.
The number everyone quotes is about 14 times a day. It appears in textbooks, patient handouts, and clinic conversations. Researchers at the University of Maryland built a small electrochemical sensor that snaps onto ordinary underwear and tracks intestinal gas continuously, day and night. In a study published in Biosensors and Bioelectronics: X and announced by the university, healthy adults averaged 32 flatus events per day. Individual totals ranged from four to 59.
The lab has launched the Human Flatus Atlas to build that baseline, shipping devices to adult participants across the United States and pairing gas measurements with diet and microbiome data. Recruitment targets three groups drawn from the early work: people who eat 25 to 38 grams of fiber daily yet produce very little gas, people who produce a great deal, and everyone in between. Stool samples from the two extremes will be analyzed to look for microbial explanations.
