Gambling Away Stability: Sports Betting's Impact on Vulnerable Households

Abstract

We estimate the causal effect of online sports betting on households' investment, spending, and debt management decisions using household transaction data and a staggered difference-in-differences framework. Following legalization, sports betting spreads quickly, with both the number of participants and frequency of bets increasing over time. This increase does not displace other gambling or consumption but significantly reduces savings, as risky bets crowd out positive expected value investments. These effects concentrate among financially constrained households, as credit card debt increases, available credit decreases, and overdraft frequency rises. Our findings highlight the potential adverse effects of online sports betting on vulnerable households.

The Economics Of Super Bowl Betting

Spreads and payouts

It's that time of the year again. Wings, dips and hot dogs are on the menu this weekend as the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. Households across the U.S. will huddle around screens, and many have already been betting on the big game, with legal wagers expected to come in at a record $1.39B, according to the American Gaming Association. Since a Supreme Court decision in May 2018, 38 states, along with the District of Columbia, have authorized some form of in-person or online sports betting.

For the first time in nearly 10 years, a Berkshire Hathaway employee claimed Warren Buffett’s $1 million grand prize for his company’s NCAA bracket contest.

An anonymous employee from aviation training company FlightSafety International, a subsidiary of Buffett’s Berkshire, won the annual internal bracket contest after correctly calling 31 of the 32 games in the first round of the men’s basketball tournament dubbed March Madness, according to a statement.

I have zero interest in basketball, but I guess I would rather watch it than the new "Snow White" movie. If I could have participated, my odds of getting 31 would be about one in two billion (random chance).

How a Secretive Gambler Called ‘The Joker’ Took Down the Texas Lottery

In the spring of 2023, a London banker-turned-bookmaker reached out to a few contacts with an audacious request: Can you help me take down the Texas lottery?

Bernard Marantelli had a plan in mind. He and his partners would buy nearly every possible number in a coming drawing. There were 25.8 million potential number combinations. The tickets were $1 apiece. The jackpot was heading to $95 million. If nobody else also picked the winning numbers, the profit would be nearly $60 million.

Apr 24, 2025

Suburban Chicago man wins $800K in sports bets, but casinos won't pay. Who was in the right?

This is the fascinating tale of a twentysomething suburban Chicago man who won $800,000 in sports bets, which he traveled as far as Iowa to place. When it came time to cash in, the casinos refused.

Thomas McPeek, 24, shares a home with his parents. The basement is a shrine to their favorite teams, including the Cubs and the Bears.

McPeek read a stack of books to make some educated sports wagers. He placed stacks and stacks of bets last year, complicated wagers on football called parlays, where several events all have to happen for the gambler to win.

"It was a calculated attack where I thought I had an edge," McPeek said.

His first stop was the sportsbook at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, in August of last year. He went in with about $30,000 over the course of around a week, and his wins amounted to $350,000.

Why Your Jackpot Doesn’t Go as Far in 2025

Jan 22, 2025
Today, lottery winners are keeping sizably less money from the total lottery prize than in previous years -- less than half of the total prize. Kurt Panouses, one of the nation's top lottery lawyers, explains why winners are walking away with less. U.S. Treasuries, Taxes and politics are among the contributing factors.
Panouses analysis is backed by his record in the lottery world, representing more than 50 $1 million ticket jackpot winners, including a $1.05 billion winner in 2021, which was one of the biggest jackpots in Mega Millions history.

5:31

This clip is from an interview Panouses and I filmed back in September 2024, that touched on a myriad of topics related to the lottery. In that interview, linked here: • Top Lottery Attorney Reveals What You MUST...

Panouses breaks down exactly what a lottery winner should do immediately after winning the lottery. We talk about the importance of anonymity, the top dos and don'ts, the issue with participating in lottery office pools, how sending money to family can go wrong and the right way to share winnings and much more. During the time of filming, U.S. treasuries were slightly higher than they are now.
