Geologists Discover One of the Largest Deposits of Gold Ever Recorded, Worth $192 Billion

In northeast China, beneath the hilly terrain of Liaoning Province, surveyors have uncovered what may be one of the most consequential gold finds of the 21st century: a deposit containing over 1,440 tonnes of gold, valued at more than $192 billion. Confirmed earlier this month by China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, the find arrives at a moment of intense volatility in global markets—and it may reshape the financial landscape well beyond Beijing.

Gold prices have skyrocketed to unprecedented levels, topping $4,100 per ounce in October, according to The Conversation. That marks nearly a 100% surge since early 2024, driven by inflation fears, global instability, and a growing retreat from traditional fiat currencies. In this context, China’s discovery is not just geological—it is deeply strategic.

The deposit is classified as a super-large, open-pit mine, with gold at an average grade of 0.56 grams per ton
multiple deep veins found between 6.562 feet (2,000 meters) and 9.843 feet (3,000 meters). Some of these appear to very high sample grades (e.g., 138 g/t)

High-Grade Mines
Fire Creek (US): Often cited as one of the world's highest-grade underground mines, with reserves over 44 g/t.
Tau Tona (S Africa) 27.99 g/t
grade at Island Gold Mine (Canada) was 13.29 g/t.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these finds, not everyone is convinced of their viability. Experts, including geologists from the World Gold Council, have raised doubts about both the accuracy of the volume estimates and the feasibility of mining these resources in the near term. They emphasize the need for independent verification and caution that turning these deposits into operational gold mines could take several years.

Unh, looks like a nothin-burger to me. Big deal; half a gram of Au a ton — woppie shit.

There are quite a few large open-pit mines that run about 0.5g / ton Gold. They just have a centuries worth of digging to do.
