Maybe it's just me, but I don't quite get the value of the comparison. Nothing there that most PM bugs don't know, and nothing to really help a newbie to make a decision on where to start. (assuming he/she could afford either)

I can concur with that.

The very first entry in the chart linked in the OP is wrong. Gold is used as a reserve asset by nearly every central bank in the world. Turkey has recently given it a greater role in banking and the new Basel III rules are calling for it to have tier one status.

The logic on the gold vs. silver ratio / mining is a bit twisted. The author is trying hard to avoid mentioning that silver is vastly undervalued right now compared to gold.
