How do you get Army fit?
Find out how the culture around training soldiers to be battle ready has changed, and see some of the people driving a new mindset on military barracks.
Is the traditional way soldiers train a thing of the past? Discover how British Army Warrior Fitness (BAWF) and functional training are revolutionising military conditioning from the gym floor to the battlespace.
We head to Larkhill, Wiltshire, to look inside state-of-the-art facilities where physical training instructors explain why high-capacity functional fitness using barbells, kettlebells, and real-world tactical movements is replacing old-school PT to prevent injuries and build stronger, combat-ready personnel.

The Ultimate Strength Exercise

In the early sixties, a new form of strength training burst on the scene and swept across the country like wildfire. It was called functional isometric contraction and was the brainchild of Dr. John Ziegler, a physician from Olney, Maryland and promoted by Bob Hoffman, owner of the York Barbell Company in York, Pennsylvania. While very few sports coaches or athletic directors in high schools and colleges approved of lifting weights, they embraced the isometric system wholeheartedly. What the school administrators and coaches liked about isometric training was it was neat, no plates to store or pick up after, safe, and quick. An entire football team of forty players could go through a workout in a half and hour. Sometimes even less than that.

Power racks sprung up everywhere. YMCAs, commercial gyms, high schools, colleges, and in home gyms. These were typically made of wood, two vertical pieces, usually two by fours or two by tens, which were attached to a small wooden platform and secured at the top with another piece of wood. Into the uprights were drilled holes large enough to pass a bar through. How many holes were drilled depended largely on how many positions were going to be used during a workout.

When Did Fitness Become So Boring? - Physical Culture Study

There's a problem in fitness that no one wants to contend with. It’s not steroids, and it’s certainly not predatory supplement sellers. Nor is it overpriced gym memberships. The problem, my dear friends, is boredom. The greatest religious movie ever made, Monty Python’s Life of Brian, sums this...

Boxing with Tough Tony Federici in the basement of the Park Side restaurant in Corona

Sep 2, 2026
Few people remember it, but there was once a full boxing gym in the basement of the Park Side restaurant in Corona, Queens. Tough Tony Federici, a captain in the Genovese family, would often spar in his gym. Pro fighters such as Vito Antuofermo, Bobby Cassidy, Wayne Kelly used to work out down there. Tony also made the gym available to some local kids who were fighting in the amateurs. #toughtonyfederici #genovesefamily #parkside

I Lifted the Original Atlas Stone - Physical Culture Study

Okay so I didn’t lift the ‘original’ Atlas stone but I did lift what historians would call, its daddy, the Inver Stone. The Inver Stone is 118kg granite Stone from Scotland which has been lifted, reportedly, since the 1700s and, if you follow the ‘family tree’ of the modern Atlas stone...

The Louis L'Amour Workout

I’ve always been interested in how famous men worked out. We’ve broken down Steve McQueen’s routine and Bruce Lee’s training here on AoM before, and every time I go down one of these rabbit holes, I come away inspired about how these guys approached fitness: they trained so they could do the...

The Strange Comfort of Squatober - Physical Culture Study

This month I spent €57 on a Squatober T-shirt. That is objectively too much to spend on a T-shirt with a squatting pumpkin on it. Annoyingly, I have spent years looking at these T-shirts, convincing myself that I needed to buy one. I eventually bit the bullet and paid for international postage...

Your Lungs Need This Every Day — Strengthen Your Breathing in Minutes | Dr. Mandell

Sep 16, 2026
Your lungs work every second of every day, but the muscles that help you breathe can benefit from being used through a fuller range of motion. In this video, Dr. Alan Mandell demonstrates simple breathing techniques designed to engage the diaphragm, encourage rib-cage expansion, and help you practice deeper, more controlled breathing. You’ll learn how to breathe using the diaphragm, add gentle resistance around the rib cage, and use controlled exhalation techniques that challenge the muscles involved in breathing. These exercises may be particularly useful for people who tend to breathe shallowly or want to become more aware of how their diaphragm and rib cage move with each breath. Practice gently and never force a breath, prolonged breath hold, cough, or exhalation that makes you dizzy or uncomfortable. These exercises are intended for general education and are not a treatment for lung disease or a substitute for medical care. If you have COPD, emphysema, asthma, heart or lung disease, unexplained shortness of breath, chest pain, or another medical condition affecting your breathing, speak with your healthcare professional about which breathing exercises are appropriate for you.

Why Aren’t Supplements Regulated Like Medicines? - Physical Culture Study

So, recently I was interviewed about supplements and how the supplement industry has changed over time. It was a pleasant chat, albeit one I doused with a sprinkle of cynicism. At one point, I was asked a fairly straightforward question. What supplements do people actually need? My answer was...

How pumping 14,443 pounds of iron turned the Florida Gators into wrecking balls

Florida’s $44 million football coach had barely set foot inside his team’s practice facility when he noticed a glaring issue.

As he surveyed the men he was being paid to lead, Jon Sumrall, a former linebacker who long ago hung up his shoulderpads, realized that these supposed behemoths couldn’t lift all that much weight. In fact, many couldn’t even lift as much as Sumrall, who is now 44 years old.

“Jon could outlift virtually all of our defensive backs, and a lot of our wide receivers,” said Florida strength coach Rusty Whitt, who doubles as Sumrall’s workout partner.
