Dan Caldwell was one of the strongest voices at the Pentagon opposing war with Iran. Then he was falsely accused of leaking classified documents and fired.

Report to Congress on Yemen, Red Sea Attacks and U.S. Policy

The following is the April 17, 2025, Congressional Research Service In Focus report, Yemen: Conflict, Red Sea Attacks, and U.S. Policy.

From the report

Yemen is a conflict-afflicted nation along the strategic Bab al Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most active shipping lanes. Since 2015, a civil war has pitted the Iran-backed Houthi movement against Yemen’s internationally recognized government, its backers, and other anti-Houthi forces. Foreign intervention complicates the conflict, which has contributed to what United Nations agencies have described as “one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world.” An uneasy truce has frozen conflict lines since 2022 . The Iran-backed Houthis have launched numerous attacks on international shipping since October 2023, ostensibly to compel Israel to end its war with Hamas. U.S.-led coalition patrol operations and counterstrikes seek to restore security in the Red Sea corridor, but Yemen’s underlying conflict remains unresolved and the Houthis could pose long-term threats. In March 2025, President Donald Trump ordered an expanded campaign of military strikes against Houthi targets. The Houthis vowed to retaliate.

On 4 Nov 1979 I walked into roll call at Incirlick air base in S/E Turkey where I was stationed as a military Policeman and we were told that the Loony bird Islamic Fundamentalist students in Tehran had finally over run our embassy there and we were to draw weapons and equipment for a stand by status/war alert. That day I thought we were going to be getting a free ride to Tehran. And had Carter sent us the Iranian military still had plenty of Shah supporters in its ranks and we probably could have pulled it off, got the hostages released, and bombed the living snot out of these nut jobs.

But Carter never sent us. We got all kinds of stuff coming in the next few weeks but Carter never sent us. That situation resembles that which exists today. Thanks to Israel Iran basically has very little in the way of air defense. They would basically be helpless against an air armada of the IAF, USAF, and the USN. America could bomb the living snot out of them and theres damn little they could do about it.

This entire world situation with these Fundamentalist mutts began that day in Nov. 1979 because all they understand is force. 9/11 ? Afcrapistan ? All the terror attacks ????? They all happened because of our weakness on 4 Nov. 1979 and the funny thing is I knew it at the time. A young snot nosed kid and I knew what a mistake it was showing weakness to this bunch. And they will never assimilate in a western culture. Never ! Dont even fool yourself into thinking they will.

Of course if we hadn't overthrown their government in 1953, none of this would be happening now. Supporting israel was also a terrible mistake costing us thousands of lives in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, and who knows where else...

Yes, the Cold War was not a nice war and we had to play for keeps against the monstrosity called the Soviet Union. Supporting Israel is the only play we have. Israel is the only Democracy in the region because Turkey sure as hell ain't. Turkey was under Martial Law in my era. The Turks actually arrested up to 650,000 in a country of only 20 million. They actually put 230,000 on trial in front of military tribunals. They executed and dissapeared God knows how many.

I dont think Americans believed me when I came home. But this is how they play in that region. Its really a miracle Israel has survived.

I had a friend who married a Muslim Turkish girl and they lived in town, unadvisedly, because she wanted to be close to her family. One night my buddy came home with a friend and the fundamentalists were waiting for them and threw both of them off a 4'th floor balcony because my buddy had married a Muslim girl. He survived, barely, but his friend didn't. Another example of tolerance in that region.

And there's your fuck up, Israel is an aparthied state that exists on American and enslaved Palestinian labor. The other fallacy is no one hated us until we forced Israel on them. WE NEED TO LEAVE.

WE NEED TO LEAVE.

We need to leave the entire middle east. We've been play both sides against the middle for a long time now. Sooner or later we'll pay for it here in America.

No clue how much money we have actually spent there but I think it would have been better spent here in our home land. Infrastructure, national health care, social security, food for those in need, etc.
