Post-World War II, standard peacetime/Cold War deployments were often planned around 6 months, with a multi-month turnaround for maintenance, training, and workups. Real-world demands frequently extended this. The OFRP (introduced around 2014–2015) aims for a 36-month cycle that includes one ~7–8 month deployment phase for greater predictability, higher home-port time (targeting ~68%), and better readiness/surge capacity. In practice, averages have risen: one analysis noted ~6.4 months (2008–2011), ~8.2 months (2012–2014), and longer stretches later. Recent East Coast deployments have averaged just under 9 months amid global commitments (e.g., Mediterranean/Red Sea operations). Extensions beyond 9 months occur due to limited carrier availability, maintenance backlogs, and operational needs but are not the formal baseline.

Nuclear-powered carriers (Nimitz- and Ford-class) have essentially unlimited range for fuel, so limits come from crew endurance, provisions, maintenance, and politics rather than propulsion. Conventional carriers in earlier decades faced more frequent logistical constraints.

Average time between port visits​

Under normal operations, carriers schedule liberty/port visits roughly every 30–45 days for crew rest, morale, resupply, and minor repairs. Visits themselves often last a few days. This is not a rigid rule—schedules depend on the mission, region (e.g., more frequent in the Mediterranean or Western Pacific vs. sustained Gulf/Indian Ocean ops), and external factors. Long continuous at-sea periods (100+ or even 160–200+ days) occur in combat/high-tempo scenarios or restrictions (e.g., COVID-era policies limiting liberty) and are exceptions rather than the norm.

Port visits also serve diplomacy and logistics; carriers made dozens of foreign port calls in studied periods (e.g., 118 visits by 13 carriers across 25 countries in FY2002–2007).

Some of the longest deployments (post-WWII)​

Long deployments were more common during the Vietnam War due to intense operational tempo in Southeast Asia. Modern long ones often stem from crises, limited hulls available, homeport shifts, or pandemics. Figures can vary slightly by source depending on whether they count pure “at sea,” homeport-to-homeport, quarantine periods, or official national-tasking deployment days (USNI News tracks the latter carefully). Notable examples include:

  • USS Midway (CVA-41): ~332 days (April 1972–March 1973) during Vietnam War operations (including intensified campaigns against North Vietnam). This is widely cited as the longest single deployment in U.S. Navy carrier history.
  • USS Coral Sea (CVA-43): ~329–331 days (1964–65, Vietnam-era Western Pacific).
  • USS Saratoga (CVA-60): ~308 days (1972–73).
  • USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42): ~300 days (1972).
  • USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78): 326 days (departed June 2025, returned ~May 2026). This is among the longest post-Vietnam and the longest for a nuclear-powered carrier in recent reporting; it operated across the North Sea, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Red Sea/Middle East amid multiple contingencies.
  • USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72): 294–295 days (April 2019–January 2020; Middle East operations + homeport shift). Previously held the post-Cold War/modern record in many accounts; it has also had other long deployments (e.g., ~290 days in 2002–03).
  • USS Nimitz (CVN-68): Crew away 341 days (2020–21), but this included COVID quarantine periods ashore; active forward-deployed operational time was lower (263 days in some tallies).
  • Other notable long modern ones: USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (~275 days / ~9 months in 2023–24 Red Sea ops); various 240+ day deployments in the 2010s–2020s.
Records for continuous days at sea without port visits are separate and shorter (e.g., Eisenhower/San Jacinto at 161 days in 2020 due to COVID restrictions; Theodore Roosevelt previously at 160 days post-9/11; more recent stretches exceeding 200 days in some cases).

Exact fleet-wide historical averages since 1945 are not published as a single official statistic (they depend on era, conventional vs. nuclear, wartime vs. peacetime, and counting methodology), but the 6–9 month range (shifting toward the higher end in recent decades) is the consistent description across Navy planning documents, USNI analyses, and reporting. Forward-deployed carriers (e.g., historically based in Japan) operate on different cycles with more frequent shorter patrols.

When I was on the carrier, coming back from forward deployment...we had Singapore liberty. Four days. Singapore, partly because the Phillipines were off-limits...the post-Marcos period, we weren't welcome there and Subic was closed.

Singapore, like most Asian countries, had a vice district. It was ALL declared off-limits.

Now the CO didn't organize a Shore Patrol to enforce it - what it was, was a message: You get in trouble chasing hoors, then we're gonna drop a load of bricks ON you, on TOP of what happened in whatever cathouse.

It was the DemocRats' (under Klintoon) experimenting with the testosterone-free Armed Forces. That same deployment, a week or so later...Australia. Perth.

MWR (Morale, Welfare, Recreation) had a civilian advance-man on the carrier, or he was on much of the time. He couldn't do much about Singapore, which is a benign dictatorship. But, in the Persian Gulf, we had once-a-month port-calls in Jebal Ali, and he would do things like organize gold-jewelry-shopping trips. He'd cleared things that we could get into the Seaman's Centre in town - where foreign civilian sailors could go, have a beer at the bar there, chase the worn-out Russian and Romanian hookers, if so desired.

Access was strictly limited, with an Islamic guard. To enter, you had to sign a document saying you were an Infidel and were committing Crimes against Allah Most Merciful. No, I'm not making this up.

But the MWR guy had to arrange this. Also, a pop-up fast-food kiosk on the beach - several trailers, marked Booger King, Kentucky Dried Chicken. Don't remember if the Fallen Arches were part of it. I didn't eat there, but I did participate in the Beer Tent, also there. Which of course took advance work - drinking beer on the beach in an Islamic nation is no easy feat.

We get to Perth, and the MWR guy flies off, to set up a venue for the Crew Post-Deployment Party. He hires a hall. Gets food and drink ordered. THEN, sends public invites, to all the high schools and other places young women would frequent. The notes were along the line of, come and meet the men of the Carl Vinson...free food, free drinks (Australia it's legal for teens to drink, or it was).

A handful of sodomites saw this, got wind of it. They sent a complaint to the Australian government bureaucracy - how come WE aren't invited? This is SEXUAL DIS-SKIMM-IN-NATION! It's also HOMOPHOBIA!

Australia forwards it to the American Embassy. They forward it to the Pentagon; to the Department of the Navy. Who sends it to our captain, who was up for an Admiralty.

And he drops the hammer. SHIP'S PARTY IS CANCELLED. Instead, there would be a picnic at an orphanage outside of town.

All the officers went to that picnic. And a handful of enlisted men, mostly office adjuncts. The driver for Commander Third Fleet, a real douche-bag, made a point of going.

The rest of us got drunk on the beach, in dive taverns. Yeah, some of the young girls found their way to the waterfront...keep in mind, I was a fair bit older; I didn't need trouble with minor females. I focused on that good Aussie beer. Some of it, not so good.

But that's the Navy today. Today's Armed Forces, is looking for a few good eunuchs.

“So, for you to pay a tiny, little bit more for your gasoline, just remember, you’re doing it so that a very evil country cannot have… a nuclear weapon,” Trump said. “So, remember that, when you have to pay a little bit more, you’re at $4, it’s okay.”

“I will never apologize,” Trump added. “I did the right thing.”

IRAN’S RAIN RETURNS, AFTER A STRIKE ON A UAE CLOUD-SEEDING BASE

For decades, large parts of Iran have suffered through severe drought, parched farmland, and dwindling water supplies. Now, areas that have struggled for generations are seeing rain and snowfall at levels not recorded in more than 60 years.

The timing is raising serious questions. The shift came shortly after a reported strike on a secret weather-modification and cloud-seeding facility in the UAE.

If the region had the capacity to alter precipitation, what exactly was that technology being used for, and who controlled it?

Was this simply a natural weather cycle finally turning in Iran’s favor? Or was outside interference involved all along? Were the U.S., Israel, and other adversaries quietly using weather technology to block rain and snowfall, deepening Iran’s drought and putting further pressure on its people?

The rain may have returned, but the questions behind it are only growing.

Imagine if T had left the JCPOA in place. Think of it in terms of people's lives, money, shipping & the supply chain, how the rest of the world views the US, etc.

I don't know the real reason why T decided to attack Iran while holding treaty negotiations with them. But had he simply left the JCPOA in place the world would be far better off today.

I wonder if he will escalate things or try to extricate us outta there?
