It seems like a questionable decision to locate a mission critical data center in an area prone to hurricanes, but what do I know.
 
Apparently Meta services are down worldwide, affecting Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. I don't use them though, so I don't have first hand knowledge.
 

Meta Ends Fact-Checking on Facebook, Instagram in Free-Speech Pitch​

Meta Platforms is ending fact-checking and removing restrictions on speech across Facebook and Instagram, a move CEO Mark Zuckerberg said was an attempt to restore free expression on its platforms.

“We’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms,” Zuckerberg said in a video Tuesday. “More specifically, we’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with Community Notes similar to X, starting in the U.S.”

Mark Zuckerberg takes stand in landmark case on social media addiction​

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the stand in a Los Angeles courtroom to testify in a civil trial on social media addiction, a closely-watched case that could have major implications for the tech industry.

While testifying Wednesday at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Zuckerberg faced questions about his past congressional testimony, his company’s approach to underage users and Instagram’s beauty filters.

The 41-year-old CEO also faced more personal questions, including about his media training. At one point, the jury was shown a document titled the “Zuckerberg comms plan,” which includes advice on how to avoid appearing “fake, robotic, corporate and cheesy.”

This is the first time that the Meta CEO, who is worth an estimated $220 billion, has appeared in a civil trial. At the center of the case is a 20-year-old California woman, identified in court papers only as KGM, who filed a lawsuit against Meta, TikTok, Google, and Snap in 2022.

Meta and YouTube found liable on all charges in social media trial​

A jury on Wednesday found that Meta and YouTube are liable for creating products that led to harmful and addictive behavior by young users, a landmark decision that could set a legal precedent for similar allegations brought against social media companies.

The jury awarded $3 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages to the lead plaintiff in the case, a woman named Kaley. Identified in court filings by her initials "KGM," she alleged that using YouTube and Instagram from a young age led to addictive use of the platforms and contributed to her mental health problems, including depression, body dysmorphia and suicidal thoughts.

Not sure I agree with the decision. Seems like if this logic were valid, fast food restaurants could be liable for scientifically balancing fat, salt and sugar to maximize addictiveness while serving unhealthy food (for example).
 


Halfway through (the first half is a Bezoszon "brushing" scam, involving empty packages that verify addresses, with external QR codes that hack phones...and banking apps, if you're foolish enough to do online banking on your phone.

The second half is how Meta, with its various platforms, is now home to a sophisticated hacking system that takes advantage of what the Woke Techies love to do...apply for "gig work" online that involves use of their own money with sophisticated legitimate-seeming promises of reimbursement. And protection of funds in Facebook-connected wallets in whatever online banking system they use.

Of course it goes like all these confidence games go. Channel 7 San Fran, interviewed a 60-year-old veteran software engineer who was unemployed, and who bought it, hook, line, and sinker. Why do these people all seem so GULLIBLE? Is it that you have to be a credulous autistic to be a software engineer and to apply for these kinds of jobs? But according to Rossen, investment scams are also involved.

(Which was why even before I swore off stonks, I insisted on buying them by going to the brokerage office and going over the fund prospectus. Now that "owners" don't even get stonk certificates, and virtually all shares are held in proprietary accounts, with "owners" holding the category of "beneficial ownership" (the NGO controlling the shares holds "custodial ownership" as described by David Rogers Webb and Cathryn Austin Fitts)...so it's now easy for even superficial con-men to run a sham online investment brokerage.)

I found the link accidentally, but while I'm not at risk, it did confirm my distrust of Stupfone QR codes or online phone-banking.
 

Meta hit with $567 million judgment in New Mexico child safety case​

A New Mexico judge ordered Mark Zuckerberg's Meta to pay $567 million, as well as make changes to the way young users use its platforms, in a ruling tied to a child safety case.

Judge Bryan Biedscheid ruled against the tech giant late on Thursday, marking the largest financial penalty Zuckerberg's company has received while battling legal suits regarding social media addiction and its harm to minors.

Biedscheid's ruling of $567 million was in addition to the $375 million Meta had been ordered to pay back in March for the same case. At the time, a jury had found that Meta did mislead its users about the safety of its social media platforms, which in turn enabled the sexual exploitation of its young users.
