Mexico: Armed clashes reported near Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge in Reynosa, Tamaulipas State, May 10

Armed clashes reported near Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge in Reynosa, Tamaulipas State, Mexico, May 10; heightened security likely.

Event

Armed clashes reportedly occurred near the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge in Reynosa, Tamaulipas State, May 10. The bridge serves as a border crossing between Mexico and the US. While officials did not immediately say which groups were involved in the fighting, the area is a major smuggling corridor, and the clashes almost certainly involved drug-trafficking organizations and security forces. Unconfirmed reports indicate that at least three people were killed in the clashes.

Police and military units are likely to deploy to the area, and significant transport disruptions, including disruptions to cross-border traffic on the bridge, are possible over the coming hours.

Advice

Avoid the area until police give the all-clear. Allow for additional transport time. Consider using alternative border crossings, such as the McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
