Right now all hell's breaking loose in Jalisco

Violence erupts in Mexico after cartel leader "El Mencho" killed in military operation

Updated on: February 22, 2026 / 10:48 PM EST / CBS/AP

Violent clashes erupted in parts of western Mexico on Sunday amid a military operation that led to the death of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader, triggering widespread security concerns throughout the region.

Mexican security forces killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho," during an operation in the western state of Jalisco, Mexico's Ministry of Defense said in a statement on X. It said he was wounded during the raid in the town of Tapalpa and died while being flown to Mexico City.

The state of Jalisco is the base of the cartel known for trafficking huge quantities of fentanyl and other drugs to the United States.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who also confirmed the cartel leader's death, described him as "one of the bloodiest and most ruthless drug kingpins."

"This is a great development for Mexico, the US, Latin America, and the world. The good guys are stronger than the bad guys," he said on X.

A U.S. defense official told CBS News that the U.S. military played a role in the operation via the Joint Interagency Task Force-Counter Cartel, which regularly works with the Mexican military through the U.S. Northern Command. The official emphasized that "this was a Mexican military operation, so the success is theirs."

Just passing this along from one of my best friends from Mexico. It’s a voice text in broken English but good intel.

From Angel about Mexico, it’s voice text

OK, so it started today they killed El Mencho. I don’t know how much you know about him but anyways right now even Cancún and Meredith, where my mom lives. All the highways are closed. They’re preparing for major affiliation attack from the CNGj
Which stands for cartel nueva generación, Jalisco

Extremely vicious so weeks before they started quietly Trump Descending Teams to Mexico For This Matter
So now has started. They are vicious, and they will hurt civilian.

There’s a lot of Americans living in Jalisco Right Now, which it’s been Orchestrated to protect them through a shelters
This is very well orchestrated and pressure by the United States

But they have a lot of power. This is just the beginning. I was trying to head that way, but there’s no way right now.

My Family Right Now. They’re praying for my Family members who works for the police, which they’re going to also be involved in Warfare with the cartel. They’re all over. They’re no joke. They’re not small and they don’t care who they hurt.

I don’t know if you’re aware the drug cartels they not only deal with drugs, but with human traffic as well.

I was predicting this to happen but now that it’s happening I’m really worried about my family and I always said the only way to clean Mexico from all the garbage is for United States to get involved in swipe claim but they’re not going to give up those people are demons they’re just vicious. They will decapitate people. They will chop people in pieces. I just hope they can’t take control of the situation like the president of El Salvador, who literally ended crime and now El Salvador is one of the safest places in the world

Let me get more info from my hometown and check. I need a little more detail. My mom and my older family all over Cancún already told me they’re burning gas stations oxxos restaurants, subdivisions, and also advising everybody to stay in. Apparently they’re trying to do some kind of martial law, but I’ll give you more information as soon as I find out more right now everybody’s praying for people down there because there’s a lot of family members also who work in the police and they gonna have their hands full.

Mexican federal forces carried out a major operation targeting the leadership of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación. The reported target was Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, one of the most wanted cartel leaders in the world.

In response, cartel members have been burning vehicles and blocking roads across parts of Jalisco, including near Puerto Vallarta. These are retaliatory roadblocks meant to slow down the military and create chaos, not random attacks on tourists.

Flights are delayed as authorities clear roads and restore order.

🚨 UPDATE: It just got worse.

CJNG has issued a direct ultimatum to Mexico: meet our demands — or our men enter your homes and hotels tonight.

Residents of Guadalajara received a chilling warning: be off the streets by 2PM or face violence. The 5PM deadline has passed. Nobody knows if they’ll follow through.

But the streets are already answering.

🔥 21+ narcobloqueos still burning — Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, Nayarit, Zacatecas, Guerrero. No signs of stopping.

🌴 Cancún — blockades and shootouts erupting in Mexico’s most visited tourist destination. Families trapped in resorts.

🌵 Tijuana — border city flaring hard. Carjackings and blockades active blocks from the U.S. border.

🏖️ Puerto Vallarta — Costco engulfed in flames. Every exit road blocked. Tourists physically cannot leave. Air Canada pulled out entirely.

✈️ Guadalajara Airport — passengers still stranded. Flights suspended indefinitely. Videos of tarmac chaos still flooding social media.

🏫 Schools closed Monday — entire statewide system shut down. Public events cancelled immediately.

🔫 National Guard engaged in active shootouts across multiple states simultaneously.

🏛️ Prison assault reports confirmed — guards killed, escapes reported.
U.S. Embassy still active: shelter in place across Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara, Reynosa, Michoacán, Guerrero, Nuevo León. Do not move.

Canada has issued identical warnings. Both countries pulling flights.

Families locked in homes. Tourists trapped in hotels waiting to see if CJNG follows through on their threat. Kids home from school tomorrow. An entire country holding its breath tonight.

A cartel threatening to kick down your door isn’t power. It’s a cornered empire screaming.

The most dangerous moment for any cartel is right after it loses its head — and CJNG just proved why.
