It featured warfare from WW2 as well as industry's role in war. This episode takes a look at Pearl Harbor; the events which lead to the heavily planned attack as well as the restoration project following the attack.

The film details, as the title suggests, submarine support operations as well as the meticulous training that submarine officers receive. The narrator emphasizes that the submarine fleets are the most vulnerable and as a result receive very intense and organized training. This film features footage of important World War II-era submarines like the USS Sirago (SS-485), USS Tusk (SS-426), USS Halfbeak, and USS Irex (SS-482).

In the far north of Norway, where western Europe and NATO border Russia, lies Kirkenes. It only has 3,500 inhabitants, but it’s a geopolitical heavyweight. A border battalion with 600 elite soldiers makes its military presence felt.
The two 19-year-old recruits David Bratland and Jesper Bruseth are doing their military service in Kirkenes with the ‘Jegerbataljonen GSV’. The training program for border fighters, around 400 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, is tough. In winter, temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius are not uncommon here. Added to that, just a few hours of daylight. During orienteering on skis, the recruits don’t just hone their physical fitness, but also their ability to take responsibility for their own actions. Their task: to monitor the almost 200-kilometer-long border with Russia and - in the event of war - to defend it. Recently, the soldiers have also received heavy weapons training for anti-aircraft and anti-tank defense.
Norway also demonstrates its claim to power and territory by promoting culture on behalf of the West. While David and Jesper cross the snow-covered expanses of the Norwegian tundra on skis, the Russian-born curator of the Barents Spektakel, Yevgeny Goman, is confronted with completely different challenges a few kilometers away on frozen Lake Förstevatne. The central element of the opening show of the art festival - a giant flying dragon - simply won't take off. But, in the end, the opening show the following evening turns out to be a great spectacle against hopelessness.

Risks of Military Confrontation in Arctic Increasing, Say U.S. and Russian Officials​

The Arctic is “where the confrontation of the world’s leading states is unfolding,” the head of the Russian Navy said at a recent forum in St. Petersburg where regional cooperation had traditionally dominated the agenda.

“In addition to political and economic measures to contain Russia in the Arctic, unfriendly states are increasing their military presence in the region,” said Adm. Aleksandr Moiseev, who took command of the Russian Navy in March. He specifically mentioned the United States’ re-establishing the Second Fleet in 2018 and the 2021 creation of NATO’s Joint Force Command in Norfolk.

Russia Commissions Fifth Yasen Nuclear Attack Sub​

The Russian Navy accepted the fifth in a class of advanced nuclear attack submarines that is set to be based near Norway, Moscow announced last week.

Attack boat Arkhangelsk was turned over to the Russian Navy on Dec. 27 in a ceremony at the Sevmash shipyard on the White Sea just south of the Arctic Circle. It’s the fourth of the Yasen-M class that are modified to field a variety of strike weapons and the fifth Yasen overall. Arkhangelsk underwent a series of sea trials starting last year.

In February 2022, just a few miles off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, all electronic navigation systems on the bridge of the USS Essex (LHD-2) went dark. U.S. Needs to ‘Out-Think’ Russia, China in Nuclear Weapon Sphere, Says Outgoing Official​

The U.S. “will have to out-think” Russia and China to prevent them from using nuclear weapons to resolve a future crisis, the outgoing head of the National Nuclear Security Administration said last week.

Answering an audience question at the Hudson Institute, Jill Hruby said, “just building a lot of weapons over the long run does not seem like a winning strategy” for deterrence. She added, “we’re going to be in a big competition with Russia and China” in the decade ahead.

As she leaves office, Hruby pointed to the modernized and variety of weapons in the Kremlin’s arsenal and to Beijing’s accelerated nuclear weapons procurement and deployment, aided by “its gigantic economy.”

What GAO Found

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) uses a layered maritime security approach to identify potentially high-risk, U.S.-bound vessels and cargo shipments. Within DHS, the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are the lead agencies that manage programs that screen, target, and examine these vessels and shipments. Both agencies conduct these activities before vessels and cargo depart foreign seaports, in transit, and upon their arrival at U.S. seaports. For example, both agencies have intelligence programs to screen and target these vessels and cargo across the supply chain.
