When I was young, one of my favourite comic book series was The Adventures of Tintin, created by Belgian Georges Remi, whose pen name was 'Hergé'. But, during the German occupation of Belgium, Hergé continued to create Tintin stories as a cartoonist for a German-controlled newspaper. When Belgium was liberated in 1944, Hergé was arrested as a collaborator. What is the truth? Did the creator of Tintin help the Germans? Did he betray his country?

In response to changes in modern warfare and multi-domain challenges of national security, the Republic of China (ROC) Armed Forces bears the responsibility of being a force of stability in society and solid backing for national security. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) has continued to apply new ways of thinking and methods to build asymmetric and resilient capabilities in recent years. The MND upholds the philosophy of preventing war by preparing for war, and diligently carries out training and combat readiness work, so as to protect citizens in everyday life and achieve the goal to prevent war and maintain peace.

When Logistics Decided Victory: The Battle of Leyte Gulf​

The U.S. military faces a critical vulnerability that could determine the outcome of any future conflict in the Indo-Pacific. While Force Design and joint modernization efforts have produced a more capable fighting force, the Sea Services have failed to remedy systemic shortfalls within their logistics enterprise. This assessment applies not only to potential Ukraine-like conflicts, but also to the far more demanding task of fighting a naval campaign in the Indo-Pacific. As a Marine logistician who has operated alongside our Marines facing sustainment challenges across the theater, I write from direct experience: Logistics remains the Sea Services’ operational Achilles’ heel.

Shortfalls in logistics are not just a naval issue; all the service chiefs routinely acknowledge them. As the services work together to develop the logistics capabilities and capacity the joint force needs, learning from the war in Ukraine will not be sufficient. Building the logistics enterprise necessary to prosecute a campaign in the Indo-Pacific will require answers from the past. The October 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf demonstrates how U.S. forces must be able to sustain themselves, while conducting distributed air and maritime operations in a future campaign of similar magnitude.

The following is the Dec. 8, 2025, Congressional Research Service in focus report, Defense Primer: Geography, Strategy and U.S. Force Design.

World geography is an influence on U.S. strategy, which in turn helps shape the design of U.S. military forces. Most of the world’s people, resources, and economic activity are located not in the Western Hemisphere, but in the other hemisphere, particularly Eurasia. In response to this basic feature of world geography, U.S. policymakers beginning in the 1940s chose to pursue, as a key element of U.S. national strategy, a goal of preventing the emergence of regional hegemons in Eurasia. This goal reflected a U.S. perspective on geopolitics and grand strategy that incorporated two key judgments: (1) that given the amount of people, resources, and economic activity in Eurasia, a regional hegemon in Eurasia would represent a concentration of power large enough to be able to threaten vital U.S. interests; and (2) that Eurasia is not dependably self-regulating in terms of preventing the emergence of regional hegemons, meaning that the countries of Eurasia cannot be counted on to be fully able to prevent, through their own choices and actions, the emergence of regional hegemons, and may need assistance from one or more countries outside Eurasia to be able to do this dependably.
