I recently bought the last Nazi Germany nickle coin before they declared nickle a critical metal and limited the distribution of an already limited limited mintage and declared all German owners of these coins turn them in for their replacements which were made of aluminum. Germany had 0 nickle and 0 nickle mining in her territory and relied on the Soviet Union and Norway for its nickle needs. This was a big reason why Hitler invaded Norway, in order to secure its nickle mines, and why he went bananas when Stalin attacked Finland because the Finns had large nickle mines too which the Reds were after.

It was Canada where 90% to 95% of the worlds nickle was mined and it was securely in the allied control. Nickle and nickle were an absolutely critical metal during WW2 and after. Anyway I'll let the article explain it better then I and I'll leave you with a picture of my 1938-J "Hamburg mint" German Reich 324-coin-50 Reichspfennig.
