Police officer files a lawsuit against Northumberland

NORTHUMBERLAND – Northumberland police officer Ed Cope has filed a federal lawsuit against the police department, chief of police Tim Fink, former mayor Gretchen Brosius and current mayor, Len Zboray.
Cope’s lawyer filed a complaint this morning in U.S. District Court alleging that his civil rights were violated resulting in his unlawful demotion from the rank of detective. Officer Cope claims he was demoted from detective to patrol officer after he repeatedly spoke out about matters of public concern as a citizen, not pursuant to his official duties.
Cope says the chief of police and the mayor retaliated against him for speaking out. Other defendants named in the complaint include the borough of Northumberland and Point Township, Councilman Greg Carl, Point Township Police Chief Joshua VanKirk, and Northumberland officer Cliff Kriner.
Cope says he has suffered embarrassment, humiliation, emotional distress, pain and suffering, psychological harm and financial harm. Cope claims the retaliation included false complaints that threatened his marriage and family, interference with his career advancement and demotion from the rank of detective. He is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. (Ali Stevens)
