Changes can be a useful sign. On the other side, I have had EMT training, and "chest pains" was always supposed to be a critical sign. Well, I have had "chest pains" since I was a teenager and if I checked into the ER a thousand times with nothing wrong, I would be bankrupt and homeless. So even though I absorbed their doctrine, I know it can be WRONG.

Eternal Life? The secrets of the centenarians | DW Documentary

Apr 20, 2025 #sardinia #dwdocs #dwdocumentary

In the villages on Sardinia's east coast, people live longer than almost anywhere else in the world. But why? Is it due to nutrition? The good weather? Or genetics? Scientists around the world are attempting to solve the mystery.

91-year-old Antonangelo leads a busy life. Every morning, he goes to milk his flock of sheep and later, turns that milk into cheese. "Work is my life, if I stop, I'll die,” says Antonangelo. Like many Sardinians in the mountain regions, he and his wife eat almost exclusively local produce. Their recipes for a long life are exercise and healthy food.

Giuseppino is already 100 years old and still manages most of the steep paths in his home village of Villagrande on foot. Is the strenuous hillside location the secret of his longevity? Giuseppino's family takes care of him, but he still lives alone in his flat and is bursting with energy. For him, a positive attitude and a sense of humor are key to a long life.

Despite a good deal of research, the secrets of the Blue Zones still haven’t been fully explained. But one study from the region does concludes that genetics play an important role in the first half of life. For 91-year-old Carolina, it’s clear that an intact family is a prerequisite for a long life. She has no intention of going into an old people's home. For her, the most important thing is for a mother to grow old with her children. And traditional food preparation is still one of her favorite pastimes.

Running every day in a personal quest to reverse aging, 87 year old Shimei Nakaoji has found a youthful spirit and powerful philosophy through the pursuit of movement. Continuing his daily ritual in Okinawa – the Japanese island renowned for its remarkable longevity – Nakaoji has shaped his everyday life and outlook around a quiet reach for immortality, refusing to let health concerns slow his drive and discovering what it means to truly live forward.
Visiting Okinawa following his father’s passing, seeking understanding about what goes into living a long life, director Alex Lockett connected with Nakaoji and his daily push to turn back the clock. Witnessing first hand one man’s key to vitality in old age, Lockett captures Nakaoji’s life in motion, mindset, and spirit for the short documentary Running Against Time. ...read more at nowness.com

And in the 1970s, National Geographic found 130-year-old Russians who chain-smoked.

It didn't appear a fabrication. The staff interviewed several, and while their experts estimated they were overstating their age (in a time of grinding poverty, few paper records, it would be hard to be sure) they figured, from the subjects' memories of events, they were well over 110 years.

Pumping Iron Is Their Secret to Aging Well

Greysteel, a gym outside Detroit, teaches barbell lifting for older people. Some are well into their 80s and 90s.

The clang of weights rang out through Greysteel Strength and Conditioning on a recent Friday morning. Over the pumping music came chirps of instruction and affirmation: You got this, push!

Ann Buszard, 84, strapped on a thick leather belt before stepping up to the barbell she had loaded to 170 pounds. She exhaled and hinged, lifting roughly the weight of a medium-size refrigerator fluidly off the ground, then reversed the move to gently set it down, safely completing a deadlift.

Ms. Buszard, a retired nurse, had never so much as touched a weight until she was 74, when she found herself struggling to stand up after kneeling down. She wanted to get stronger, and her son had heard of a local doctor who was moonlighting as a weight lifting coach.

New to the weight-room culture and experience; but one thing jumps out.

Every workout routine or exercise of a set of muscles, has any number of variants. Even stretching...a thousands moves, about ten to exercise the same basic groups. The machines, some use plates on a hook, some have weight racks; and some even use bungee cords to get the same muscle groups.

It's all good. If you can swing free-weights, barbells, that's great - trains coordination as well as raw strength. Some machines in the gym I use, use those same plates on designed pins, where you lift the frame on the station and the weights you hanged, are the weight of the machine. Others, you pop the pin in the rack, marked with how much weight, corresponds to weight of a free-lift. For example, on those Life Fitness machines, I know the racks I have lined up, aren't really 80 or 100 pounds. The cables and levers simulate that weight.

It's all good. Just getting out and DOING it, helps.

Anyone remember the old Universal machines of 55 years ago? I'd have loved to get a used one, back when I owned my own home. Maybe they weren't the best at everything, but to have all the exercise groups in four stations on one machine...what a space saving.
