I forget where I just read this, but families in Portugal have been selling a lot of their gold too. I will try to look into this before I put my article (with lots of pictures) at my blog when I return in about a week.

I have two more attempts to track down a reporter here in Italy to ask if they can tell me more about Italians selling their gold. The cabbies (etc.) have already told me that people are selling because they HAVE TO, not just to buy iPhones...

Extended unemployment will lead to forced asset sales to make ends meet. If you aren't seeing "blood in the streets" yet there is still more to come.

Cash for Gold sales have declined here recently, but i believe that is simply because a lot of folks no longer have anything left to sell.
