11 homes in the Northern Territory have been left without water as camels crash through fences and rip taps and air conditioners off walls. A stampede of thousands of camels marching through the desert, desperately searching for water, has left residents too scared to leave their homes. The McDonnell Regional Council has been trying to manage the situation, chasing camels out of communities, but they've been fighting a losing battle. Camels were introduced to Australia in the 1840s to assist with exploration and transportation, and it's estimated there are now more than a million camels roaming the desert. The council has written to the Northern Territory government and the Central Land Council to ask for help. A joint task force has been established to cull camels around Mount Liebig as soon as possible.
